we'll go back to the strikeout call that dave trembley was asked about. as we watch this video, pay particular attention to jeff kellogg the home plate umpire. as melvin swings, watch his arms. he signals foul ball. >> he does. the ball runs in on melvin. he's trying to do everything he can to turn the opposite way. most hitters tush their -- turn their shoulders into it let the ball hit him. melvin tries to turn away. the ball hits his hand and the bat at the same time. the umpire sees all hand. as the swing went around as we saw the swing, it's an automatic out if you swing at a ball and it hits any part of your body at the same time. >> what was interesting about that is if he saw all hand, why did the umpire put his hands up to sinning signal foul ball unless it was one of the base umpires that said wait a minute i saw it hit his hand. >> more like almost a time-out call i would have to say at the same time because it really wasn't much of a foul ball. yes, he did kind of indicate foul ball at the time, but i think really what he was trying to do was

dave trembley did say this is a big blow. dave says it's going to be very difficult to replace cesar izturis. in other news, a lot going on today. as jim and rick mentioned, jamie walker has been released. he is a ten-year veteran. it was very difficult to make but it had to be made, really if you look at the numbers as dave trembley said. jamie was supposed to be a left hander specialist and left handers were hitting .450 against him. but it was very difficult because people liked jamie walker. he was very popular. jamie burke told me that nobody reached out to him early on but jamie walker. that's something that had to be discussed over the last few days. you know, obviously, his last appearance in seattle was the one that finallized it. walker was a great teammate and a tremendous person on the club for us. he totalllly understood and, yo know, we just left it at that. but i'm -- we'll miss what he brought other than, you know, just out there pitching because, like i said, he was a great teammate. he earned a lot of respect

today dave trembley was asked whether or not the left-handed specialist is an important role?ets important. you have to have that ability to match up, plus you have to force the other guy into making a move. and if you don't force him into making a move, he's got to know that you've got that bullet, i mean, it's a strategic thing. i'll be real honest with you, there's times when you put a left-hander in there and get a left-hander out, it doesn't happen once, you're okay with it. it doesn't happen twice, the red light goes on. three times, you start going, hey, maybe you got to start putting guys in and play the game as if you don't have a left-handed guy. and that's honest. >> so trembley is saying at some point you've just got to go with the best guy that's going oh get that batter out. but he also said he does not want to play without a left- handed specialist. but as far as alberto castillo is concerned, it's very interested, left-handed batters are hitting .429 against him, while righties are 0-3 against him. >> last night he allows two hits, one of those runners scored.
