i received an email recently when i was writing my latest book about the culture and how parents can help take back their families from a teacher of fourth grade. and when i read that email, i became very much aware at how much damage we had done through the pop culture, through the pornography, through the glorifying of pop icons and sports stars and entertainment figures over real heroes, how much damage we'd been doing to the younger generations. this particular teacher had given an assignment to her fourth grade class. to write down a type of hero they would like to become. and over 50% of the boys put that they wanted to do something related to some sort of crime activity. even one of them stating he wanted to be a hitman. their role models and they're cons were people like madonna and 50 cent and rap stars. not one mentioned a military hero. not one mentioned becoming a politician or a statesman. not one mentioned becoming somebody that would give back to others. well, i would submit that that is enough evidence right there to show what we've done with the word "heroes." my goo

i just got an email from a friend of mine, a historian named al felzenberg and he's considering a political biography of bill and the parallel he came up with -- and this was fascinating was frederick douglass. and frederick douglass was also a private man. he never held office. but he was a journalist. he was an eloquent orator. he was an organizer. he was a networker. he was a wire-puller. he was, obviously, an outsider for the obvious reason that he was, you know, a black man in pre-bellum america. i'm excited to see al work this out 'cause i thought, gee, this is interesting. there are people that you can find some resemblances to and we just have to -- you know, we can't produce the next one. we just have to be sure that the opportunities are there and that when they knock on the door those doors will open. yes. a few days after i won the democratic nomination, i received an email from a doctor who told me that while he voted for me in the primary, he had a serious concern that might prevent him from voting for me in the general election. he described himself as a christian who was strongly pro-life, but that's not what was preventing him from voting for me. what bothered the doctor was an entry that my campaign staff had posted on my website. an entry that said i would fight right-winged ideologies who want to take away a woman's right to choose. the doctor said that he had assumed that i was a reasonable person, but that if i truly believe that every pro-life individual was simply an ideologue who wanted to inflict suffering on women, then i was not very reasonable. he wrote, i do not ask at this point that you oppose abortion, only that you speak about this issue in fair-minded words. fair-minded words. after i read the doctor's letter i wrote back to him and thanked him. i didn't change my position, but i did tell my staff to change the words on my website. and i said a prayer that night

i have email on the go all the time, and utilize it throughout the day and well into the evening. but i simply have not begun to adopt twitter yet. my wife is so passionate about it that if i do not start using it, i may find i am not able to communicate effectively with her. host: she has this to say. "i do not get the opposition. pollution is pollution. what is the problem trying to clean things, cleaner that we found them? guest: i think she's absolutely right that we do have a problem. the scientific consensus globally is tthat the reason tht we are experiencing rises in temperature, that it is being caused by human activity, and it will worsen to the point that we have clearly unacceptable consequences for the plant unless actions are taken. for those who are not persuaded -- for the planet unless actions are taken. for those who are not persuaded, there are practical reasons. a year and a half ago, the a united states supreme court declared that carbon dioxide is a pollutant. under the ruling, the environmental protection agency is not only in power but effectively required
