[applause] president reagan and mrs. reagan have one of the great love stories of all-time and the american people benefited from that. the support, the love that mrs. reagan gave the president were a source of joy to the american people and again of strength to the president of the us. mrs. reagan, with your presence here today i hope you know that we honor you, not only for your support of the president for turning that support and love into action. with your support stem cell research has made a significant difference in the lives of many american people. it has saved lives. it has found cures. it has given hope to people. it is appropriate that we hear from leaders from both sides of the aisle and both chambers of the house. i am privileged that my predecessor is here. thank you dennis for joining us. we know nobody was more important to president reagan than his loving first lady nancy. mrs. reagan, it is wonderful to see you. i had a wonderful time visiting with you before we came here, exchanging stories about ronald reagan. but you are here today, smiling as always by president reagan's side. the talented sculptor said when he carved the statue he shaped the president's face in the familiar grin reagan would flash moments before one of his jokes. that grin came often. he told a lot of jokes. this is a fitting place to honor him. he began his first term telling the country that the americans held for more than a year in iran that they were on their way home. it was temperatures here that president reagan began his second term. the first inauguration i attended as a member of congress and the first and only time the president has taken the oath of office in the capitol rotunda. on that bitter cold day president reagan's characteristic confidence warmed and reassured america. here is what he said. shft a ribbon. he said it in this room. nearly quarter of a century ago. his

the pullback, they're real blow back as far as death threats came from the nancy reagan book. >> really? >> yes and the mainstream media got so crazed because i had written a book about, that was the last book and i wrote about the rise and demise of a political dynasty saying in effect we will never have this kind of dynasty again. adis white anglo-saxon protestant you will not have that kind of a dynasty in the country again. the media went crazy so i got pulled back from the media about a house far as the threats it came from the nancy reagan book. not sinatra although he sued me before i had written a word for $12 million. >> when do you deliver the oprah book? >> i don't know. i'm still writing. it is a fascinating life story. it really is. it's probably more fascinating than anything i've written before. >> okay. when it comes out you have to come on my show, when larry king is finished with you come to me. >> let's do you first. >> if my ship ever comes i don't want you to write about me. >> i would be worried about him. >> you would be bored. accept all i mean it. >> that's who

reagan was going to run again. there was real doubt out there, and a lot of it fueled by nancy because she was not sure that he could win re-election. and there was a very bad recession, and she didn't want her husband to risk defeat, and that fueled a lot of uncertainty and speculation. so van said, well, bill, you should run. and he was kind of serious about this. kind of serious about this. and bill was listenle to it kind of seriously. i mean, not seriously seriously, but kind of seriously. then i did one of the things that just kind of astonished me when i thought about it, because i remember what happened. i got up to go -- i had had a few myself. bill shook my hand as i was leaving, and i said, well, the discussion has taken an unserious term. what rude thing to say. what rude thing to say. and should he have run for president ever? no, i don't think so. i don't think he was cut out for it. not any place to say that. time and history and circumstance would say that. not my place to say it. so, you know, love is rough. i mean, there's a lot that goes on and a lot that -- a lot of mistaken things that happen, b
