railroad operator csx out with earnings today. cnbc's matt nesto right now at earnings central nerve center. matt, what can you tell us? >> this is the first of the four big railroads to report. and their earnings look better than expected, or less worse than expected. you've got to keep it in mind. if you take a look at the results and what's happening in the market, which is the ultimate arbiter, you're going to see a stock adding to gains it had in the regular session. csx was up about 1 1/2% at last check. i saw the shares were trading higher by about 6%. you can see -- there you go. by 6%. that's on top of, folks, what we did in the regular session here today. so the number, the eps that i look at is 72% -- 72 cents per share on a continuing ops basis. 62 cents was the estimate. that's down 24% from a year ago. the revenues fell 25% to an in-line $2.2 billion. the ceo saying there are some signs of the bottom that they're seeing here. but if you take a look at the big picture in terms of what's been happening with transports

csx came out and said their volumes were down 21% in the second quarter. stock is up because the company came out and said that will improve in the third quarter. it will still be down volumes for them still will be down in the double digit area here. mixed messages number two, the retail sales numbers, up. x autos. comps have been very tough because of the rebate checks last year. the bulls arguing inventories are low and these companies are very lean now. back to school is what's going to be lean. i don't know anybody who's bullish on back to school now. most of the big names in retail were on the upside here today. finally the stimulus package is not coming in the way some people anticipated. martin marietta do all the stone paving for all the highways and construction companies had weak revenues here. they said their earnings would be on the weak side for the rest of the year because state revenues are weak. they're not getting the kind of money from the state and stimulus money is not arriving in time. they're expecting a large amount of the stimulus

but it has affected both amtrak and csx rail traffic, north of the downtown baltimore. all trains have been stopped in both directions. the ones coming northbound have been stopped at penn station. and many of those folks that were on the northbound amtrak lines have been marooned at penn station. most of the afternoon. now, there is no word on whether amtrak at this point has set up any kind of a bus bridge, for points north of baltimore. we do know that bge is making progress here in getting the gas turned off. they said they were going to have some folks try to get down here and get this gas line turned off. the reason they stopped the rail traffic is because as the trains go by, the electric trains, they cause arcing from where the tops of the trains touch the overhead lines. and they're afraid that that arcing will cause an explosion with this large amount of volume of gas in the area. again, they have evacuated some buildings nearby. these are mostly business areas and warehouse areas. but the road is closed in both directions. they have a fire command post set up
