and paul kirk will be a superb steward of this seat. governor patrick found the person for this moment. and i believe he did what's in the best interest of the state of massachusetts. i want to also thank speaker delio for the leadership and skill for which they shepherded this through the legislature. i want to thank the joint committee. they managed to tame the forces that would've pushed against this effort and forced people to perhaps take the easiest route, the path of the least political resistance. and it might have prevailed had it not been for their skill and the courage of the joint committee and all of those who voted for this. like ted kennedy, they weren't afraid to sail into the political winds for the best interest of the state of massachusetts. none of us here today forget the fact as paul just mentioned that ted kennedy spent the final weeks of his life just as he spent his entire life looking out for massachusetts. and he reminded us and these are his words. it is vital for this commonwealth to have two voices speaking

why paul kirk and not former governor dukakis? >> well, like i said, we've got a lot of political talent. i love mike dukakis. i think he brings a lot to the table. when you think about all of the factors and contributions and, again, this point of stewardship, i think paul kirk is the right one. i prefer to talk about why him than why not -- why not others. there is a -- there is one thing i will say that is so -- has been so humbling about this experience, and that is looking at this extraordinary field of candidates, and appreciating their deep sense of service. and that was certainly true of mike dukakis as it was of paul kirk as it was of the other finalists. >> you know, the health care debate that's going on now in the senate and in the house in washington, that has consumed the nation. it's consumed much of the country with all of the town hall meetings this past summer. massachusetts health care reform that was initiated several years ago that joined former governor mitt romney and the late senator kennedy, how is that wo
