oracle, eps, 30 cents right in line with consensus of 30 cents. we're seeing oracle shares decline, actually accelerate the declines the company saw earlier in the trading day. that's probably because of the revenue. the top line number here. lighter than expected. $5.1 billion against the $5.3 billion that wall street was anticipating. the reason that's significant here is a lot of analysts on wall street were hoping to see some kind of strength as far as enterprise spending was concerned and we would get that from oracle which has become a real bellwether when it comes to this kind of thing. if you look at other metrics that you want to take into account here, the company's operating margins are beginning to accelerate and nicely. it was 46% for the company's first quarter. that's up 570 basis points. that might be a little better than some on the street had anticipated. it's going to come down to guidance and what oracle is seeing on a macrobasis as far as the company's business for the back half of 2009 is concerned. all in all, that top line

oracle has a lot of cash, but also oracle has a lot of debt. same thing with ibm. there's a difference between cash and net cash. apple, microsoft, these companies have great net cash. we need to make that distinction when talking about cash. >> roger, you said before if somebody was going to be acquiring a facebook, for example, microsoft was a good choice. do you want to take a stab at that? >> there aren't too many out there that be big enough to buy a facebook, that's for sure. social networking is obviously a huge thing now in terms of content. that's probably the biggest new thing in content. so they're the only ones. they've repeatedly said they're not for sale. i think microsoft earlier this morning, i heard jim goldman say they're going to deny it, but stepping into the game space would seem to be a logical space. the companies are fairly small. if you look at electronic arts doing about $4 billion in revenue, or active vision, again about $4 billion in revenue. it's tough to add a lot to moerk soft's bottom line. but i think that's another place would be

the dow starts off higher, plunges deeply and on the strength of companies like intel, oracle, cisco and others, earlier the entire market stages a dramatic comeback. rallies like the one we are seeing today can be fleeting. that can't be said for tech knocks this year. big cap tech can't fall out of favor. as we head to the third quarter season, it seems optimism is gaining momentum. others like google and apple, as well. even though both of those have turned negative. ftn is out with a report this morning confirming a 10% to 15% quarter to quarter jump in motherboard shipments and user demand for desktop pcs seems to be picking up in emerging markets and stabilizing in developed ones. among the chip makers, i supply with a market improvement from the 23% decline it predicted. aside from intel, cypress, nvidia and xilinx, they are worth looking at. real question is whether this rally has legs or has gotten ahead of itself. that's why earnings in a couple of weeks or so important this time around with a recent round of upgrades. the street still thinks this rally has room to ride. ba
