school, but when i first got sworn in and thought i knew a few things, we sat there, myself, sophie and gavinwe voted over and over, and we weren't going anywhere. mayor brown gave me no plan b, so i kept voting that way. mayor brown doesn't tell you plan b, you have to stick with plan a, which is what i was smart enough to do. but one challenge that exists for our city to think about as we celebrate accomplishments is that san francisco cannot be a great city without strong black leadership, and it has dwindled in the past years. as wonderful as it is that our city elected ms. harris to be d.a., she is taking care of business, but here at city hall, there are issues and decisions, and the need for representations at different levels is not where we need it to be in order to bring back what we have had in sna francisco. if we want a robust african- american presence in san francisco, we have to start at leadership levels. but sophie has been getting power plants closed, adver -- advocating for transportation plans for bayview, and moving forward to make sure we have a redevelopment plan in ba

with me, gavin newsom, who will do the honors. >> it was an extraordinary commitment the public made when it passed not one bond, but two bombs. what a contrast is to be in san francisco in spite of this huge budget challenge where we are actually expanding our hours of the last 12 months, of expanding them on the evenings and on sundays and investing in unprecedented amounts of capital and improving the physical conditions of the library. we're proud of that, and it is important to reflect on that. i do not know of another city that can lay claim, so i am proud to be here and thankfully to the time to be here and it is an honor for me. it is the second time to appoint a poet laureate to our city, and this is going back to the previous administration, when lawrence ferlinghetti took the baton. he has now passed it on, officially, from jack kirsch men to diane as our fifth poet laureate. you would have thought that it must have gone on longer. but i am proud of it. as was jack, and i do not see him here, of his stewardship. jack and i did not always agree on every issue, and i went in

this is an item that has been introduced by mayor gavin newsome.and under the law we are required to have a hearing on it. is there someone from the mayor or the police department who is here to present on this item? last night's 10-1 vote was a victory for supervisor sophie max well and mayor gavin newsom. they both have pushed the redevelopment project for years. >>> the tower section of the new east bay bridge is on track. anne makovec explains. >> it's a historic moment. i'm in front of the bay bridge, that's yerba buena island over there oakland on the other side. there's been a crane, floating crane, over there working until february doing pre-assembly work ready to lift the first piece of what's expected to be an iconic tower in a few hours from now the beginnings of a new bay bridge landmark is about to take shape. here's an animation of what's going to happen over the next several weeks. the tower will be built from multiple legs. the first will be put into place at around 12:30 today. each leg weighs over 1,000 tons and stands more than 150 feet tall. the tower itself will be 525 feet tall rising at the end of yerba buena island. from it, cables will loop down hold the bridge's two side-by- side roads. >> stayed is history in the making. it's the first piece of our tower going

last night's 10-1 vote was a victory for supervisor sophie maxwell and mayor gavin newsom. they have both pushed the project for years. >>> the city is letting voters to decide whether to raise taxes in november. people in san francisco will vote on a measure to increase the tax on property sales from 1.5 to 2%. that's only for homes valued between $5 million and $10 million. the voters will also decide whether to raise the hotel tax from -- that is no typo -- from 2% to 17.5% and hike the vehicle registration fee by $10. >>> other voters will decide whether to raise local sales taxes. the antioch city council voted last night to put a half cent increase on the november ballot. it was as you see a packed house at city hall. a lot of people objected to the idea. but city leaders say if the measure doesn't pass there will be more budget cuts and more police layoffs. >> the city is facing between a 3.7 and $4 million shortfall next fiscal year. so unless we find a revenue source now, we're laying off a lot of cops next year. >> if approved, the higher sales tax would begin jul
