nbc bay area's kris sanchez is live in sunnyvale with the story. good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. the blue cube, as most people know it, as helped to guide the space shuttle program through our nation's program, but today a ceremony to formally close the doors forever. the closure is five years in the making. the base was slated for closure in 2005, as part of the military's base realignment effort. the operations of the 50-year-old station will be transferred to vandenberg air force base in santa barbara, so there is still work to be done. however, only 25 people who work here will be transferred there. the other 145 people or so will be out of a job. though the closing ceremony is scheduled for later this morning, a few folks will stay on to wrap things up because a complete shutdown of the station which is named for one of the astronauts on the space shuttle "challenger" disaster, who died in that disaster, it was named after that astronaut, ownzooka, the formal closing, everything won't be wrapped up and closed compl
