kris sanchez is live in san francisco now. she has a look at what happened. kris? >> reporter: good morning to you. police quick to say they don't think the two shootings, one that happened last night and one this morning, are related. but we know they happened outside popular nightclubs in san francisco. the latest happened about three hours ago outside the 1015 nightclub. the building with the green light. now, the shooting did not happen there. rather down the way in an alley a few doors down. here, two women were shot in the gunfire but are expected to be okay. they are being transported to the hospital. that's not the case for the woman who was shot earlier last night outside another nightclub. this woman shot outside the ruby sky nightclub, that nightclub was closed at the time, but that woman died from her injuries. another woman and a man were also treated but will survive. in each shooting, police are investigating and have not identified suspects. but we can tell you last months there was a deadly shooting outside a different nightclub. six months ago the

kris? >> reporter: good morning, rob. that triple digit heat that you're talking about in some parts of the bay area could mean another one-two punch for commuters, whether they are on rail lines, on the bus, or on the roadway. here at the fremont b.a.r.t. station, we're hearing from passengers that the delays were about ten minutes for most of them. the problem was that riders were stuck when the b.a.r.t. train control rooms overheated because of an air-conditioning problem. that put the trains into manual mode and that means driving those trains at 25 miles an hour instead of 75 miles an hour. so you can imagine the backups there. on caltrain, the trains were slow as well, but for a different reason. there, because if temperatures are this hot, caltrain slows down the train so they don't warp the tracks as they're passing by. on ac transit, passengers were just hot and sticky. though today is expected to be a full degrees cooler, commuters are expecting more of the same, and that's why one commuter tells us he will take

kris sanchez has more on what they're doing to get ready. >> reporter: good morning to you. in most communities the school is at the heart of the community and a gathering point, so it is here in this neighborhood in san jose. when this school went up in flames, the community wasted little time in rallying behind. the fire was just about a month ago and it destroyed about 85% of one of the two buildings. in total 15% of the classrooms. the school year will start as set, august 16th. we talked with the superintendent earlier today and he said the district worked very hard, but so has the community. just this weekend there was a rather large community garage sale organized by a woman who doesn't even have kids in the school district who wanted to show support and to raise money as quickly as possible. the california teachers union estimates every teacher spends at least $1,000 out of pocket in getting ready for the school year. this year special challenges since many of them lost stockpiles of years worth of materials in the fires. here is one of the organizers of that fund ra

kris sanchez is tracking their mission from our newsroom. what's in store? >> here's the time line we are talkings will start working the border today. by the end of september they will be joined by 500 more. we expect 224 of our national guard troops from california to deploy to the border between now and then. governor schwarzenegger reported they are trained and ready to go. president obama ordered the deployment in may. while some folks in the region welcome the troops there, others have a problem that the service men and women will carry guns but only for self-defense. they have no authority to arrest anyone breaking the law, and if a member seeing someone crossing the border illegally, they have to contact the border patrol for action. the new $600 million border security bill will mean better tools, night vision equipment, computers, cameras and radios. there is no question that the drug war along the border is escalating. just yesterday a mayor in a mexican state which borders texas, he was shot dead in his truck as he was driving with his little dau

good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, kris. we are talking about trace elementary school. just over a month ago a devastating fire here destroyed 16 classrooms and the library. the school district, the san jose unified school district then at that time made a pledge and vowed to have trace open in time for the first day of school which is today. by all appearances, the district kept its promise. students will be returning to a much different-looking campus. the district had to bring in 20 portable classrooms. they set those up on a temporary campus located across the street because it will be some time before the building destroyed in the fire is rebuilt. the community has pitched in on that effort, having raised more than $100,000 to cover the district's insurance deductible. teachers have also received thousands of dollars of donations to replace supplies that were lost in the fire what is difficult for teachers, though, is some of those items destroyed in the fire can never be replaced, materials they might have accrued over
