i'm the executive director of native american health center on cap street. following up on the comments, i'd like to give you a background on what we do for the community and city of san francisco. approximately 27% of our parents -- patients are native which means a majority of our parents are not native -- patients are not native. we have a safety net clinic. we serve over 85% of our clients are below the federal poverty level and most of them are uninsured. they do not have dental insurance, medical insurance. we have one of the only few native american h.i.v. departments in the country. we also do testing it daily on a drop-in basis. we're one of the few organizations in the city that does that. we also have a pediatric dental program in our clinic where. we're a training site as well as the other dental school here in town. we are the only pediatric dentist in hunters point. we actually go out there once a week to provide dental care for the children out there. there is no pediatric dental carat hunters point. -- care at hunters point. we also have a me

the interesting thing with native american tribes is previously people would automatically assume that one tribe was the same as the next. my particular tribe, the cherokee, are completely different than our cousins out in oklahoma, the cherokee nation of oklahoma. within our reservation in north carolina, we have seven individual communities and each of those communities is completely different. we're a collective people, but we're all individualized in our communities. and how do they differ in terms of service delivery, for example, when you have to address their addiction issues? it comes down to developing that level of trust. some of our communities, it seems to be the communities that are closest to the center of the reservation are more apt to seek services as opposed to some of our more isolated communities, especially up in the mountain regions. very good. john, in your line of work you deal mostly with lgbt communities and i know you have experience with the disability sector as well. can you talk to us about particular idiosyncrasies within these that need to be addressed a

we do find that programs that are run by american indians, alaska natives, for american indians, alaska natives or programs that target hispanics, run by hispanics, tend to produce better outcomes than programs that are not sensitive to those issues. so we use sort of a bias force paradigm. there are programs that are not run by the specific population group, but have modules that are targeted to the unique needs of that group. so they do not as well as the programs that are run by the specific population group, but they do better than programs that are general. so when we look at the outcomes of, say, a woman in a male program or a general program that doesn't have any gender specific programming, she doesn't do as well as the program that is targeted to, for women, run for women or a program that has gender-specific issues. the same thing for american indian, alaska natives, hispanics, african americans, and the same thing would be applicable to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender. the key issue is of cultural competence and that is the thing that if indeed you know you've got a d

it is something i think a lot about, especially transition history, native americans, how they have this combination of dress, from the clothing from trade companies, mixed with traditional dress. i love how reflective it is of who they are, and also the merging history's coming together. what would we look like if we carry our history with us? all of the merging of cultures, reflected in our address? i am thinking of my own history with early europeans coming in and intermixing with native cultures. the one thing i would like people to take away from after seeing my work is a sense of wonder and who we are as americans. that we are really these beautiful mixes of people and we should really be looking backwards at who we are. i think we are all kind of historians in our own life, and there are great presidents behind us -- president behind us that could give us insight into who we are. >> oliver road trip on her website. check at often. new experiences will be added after every stop.
