[applause] thank you. for 125 years on this side, this hospital has taken care of people, regardless of their ability to pay, no matter what their ethnicity was, whether they were a man or woman or transgendered -- would never came fourth, we took care of, and we are so proud to be here -- what ever came force -- whatever came forth, we took care of. we are so appreciative to all of you who helped us on this campaign. san francisco general hospital, when it went before the voters, received 84.3% of the vote. [applause] now, what i want you to think about is when did 84.3% of san franciscos agree about anything, that we got that high level of votes? we did not get that because of the campaign we ran, although we ran a very good campaign, and i'm very appreciative to all of the people here, from the labor unions -- especially 1021 -- who helped us -- [applause] thank you. through the business community, we were supported by democrats, republicans, and greens. we got great support from the other hospital. man

my first encounter with san francisco general was as a trauma patient. i was brought after i was injured during a mugging in the city, and i came back as a staff nurse, and then came back as a registered nurse working in critical care, and now, i and the ceo. i am so glad to be here. [applause] i have seen general from all sides, and let me tell you, there is no better team on earth. the entire staff san francisco general, the doctors, nurses, administrators, officials, social workers, pharmacists, housekeepers, is workers, everyone -- there is just so many of you. i cannot say the mall. i want you to stand up, and we should applaud you for all the great work you do. [applause] stand up, please. they really do an amazing job. and we are all so excited because in this new building, we are even going to be able to do a better job. remember, we are not just here simply to celebrate a new building. we are really celebrating the health-care services that we are going to be able to provide to all san franciscans. as the only trauma center in the city, we will

also, i had requested numerous times that san francisco general be investigated for suspicious activities. in my opinion, for the record, the three supervisors still oppose any inquiry into san francisco general hospital, including the ada situation. i felt i've applied to all lead to requests -- i replied to all the requests that were made at the time. i feel like he and i were shortchanged by somebody up the ladder. if you are applying for an ada process, how the city can put you on mandatory sick leave, to me, nobody was asking for sick leave. i was only inquiring what the a daada could do to help me with y back problems. i feel like the process was this used for whatever purposes the city needed. in my opinion, the ada is there to help people who really need help. people like me are looking to them for guidance. it seems strange that instead of giving me guidance, they basically short circuit the system and, in my opinion, ending the system. ada compliance need to be seriously considered, especially at the board level. in my opinion, this committee is even weaker than the ethics commi

they found a way to add back more than $40 million in funding for strick beds at san francisco general helicopter -- psychiatric beds at san francisco general hospital. unless board would agree to reject two proposed charter amendments to reform the transportation agency and the recreation and park commission. let's remember the -- have nothing to do with the budget. the board wanted to overall haul this department and give them some appointments because they are a mess. it is a rubber stamped agency that goes nearly 100% tune in anymority on every issue. unanimity on every issue. the money was there but he wouldn't. he would allow desperately old people to be turned away for lack of a bed if the board didn't stand by its own reforms. providing a critical vote for the mayor's agenda, the board went along with the deal. the mayor didn't give up his. the newsome measure would prevent lebtsed officials from servings on the democratic committee is still on the ballot. several deserve credit for refusing to refuse to accept a bad and embarrassing deal. the mayor played tough. if the supervi

as a public service to san francisco, especially the poor and disabled, we ought to be doing it on san francisco general hospital, and if ms. newman feels she has enough time, we ought to do the whole department of public health. it's still baffles my mind why almost every supervisor has opposed any formal inquiry into san francisco general hospital and department of public health. according to ms. newman's own words, she said she had plenty of ours, and in order to maybe expedite the process, since i myself work for 20 years at general hospital, i would gladly donate unlimited number of hours to point the budget analyst's office into areas where they should be checking this out. there was a 2003 financial audit done and presented to the board of supervisors. i'm still wondering why there is still opposition on the board level to doing a review to see whether those recommendations are carried out. doing something like that, i think, is far more helpful to the poor and disabled in san francisco who depend on the hospital's services rather than doing it on an agency, according to my research, that has not

san francisco with more. >> reporter: good morning. police just gave us an update on this case. they believe there are two people that attempted to rob the federal agent. one is recovering at san francisco general hospital recovering from non-life- threatening gunshot wounds. here's what happened -- we're told the agent involved is a federal agent with the irs's criminal investigation unit. san francisco police say that agent was off duty last night. he or she was walking through the city's bayview district near la salle and kirkwood shortly after midnight. police say that's when two individuals approached that agent and attempted to rob him or her but the agent fought back. they opened fire and shot one of the suspects. san francisco police will do an administrative and criminal investigation into the shooting. they add that's customary any time a law enforcement officer is involved in a shooting even if the officer is not from their department. they also said the irs will conduct an investigation. she told us a little bit about what these agents do and why they carry guns. >> a lot of people ask -- think we just do audits. that's not what we do. we do audits but we also investigate when peopl

borne by the department of public health in the form of supervision in treatment and also san francisco generalospital. the fire department there's an enormous cost, mostly through emergency medical costs and transportation. what the ordinance says is that it is designed to reimburse the city for these under reimburse costs, and it proposes is essentially 7 cents per ounce of ethanol, which is the equivalent of 5 cents per drink, on every drinks sold in san francisco, and that is just kind of a way of talking about it, but really, it would be placed on wholesalers and others who are selling directly to consumers. but i want to just go through some of these things. we're hearing some things that i think we need to clarify a. it is not a hidden tax. a well-established law allows the government to set fees as long as there is a reasonable relationship between the source of the fee, in this case those selling alcohol, and how the money is to be used, in this case to reimburse the city for the cost of harm. the other things we are hearing is that the city will penalize everyone for the irresponsible
