eric shawn is live at the u.n. for us. this meeting on iran, tell us about it. >> reporter: jon, in about five minutes or so the five permanent members of the security council, plus germany, expected to begin this meeting, another attempt to try and stop iran. the meeting will be behind closed doors as they try and coordinate the policy against tehran and its efforts to continue a disputed nuclear program. as you know, iran is violating four security council resolutions. this all comes as mahmoud ahmadinejad remains in new york for this week and so does his heated rhetoric, but despite that the iranian president indicated that iran would be interested in talks. the white house has left open the door, they say, for that, but there's nothing concrete yet. we expect a meeting to come out of that statement when it is completed. this comes as we heard ahud barak who told us he thinks sanctions with more effective than people think, and they need more time and warns the world much get much -- must get much tougher. >> there is a

>> shepard: eric shawn live at the united nations. there are new details tonight about what life may have been like for the american woman held prisoner in iran for more than a year and for her fiance and friend still stuck there the iranians of accused them of spying. they claim they cross the the border by accident. sarah shourd now back in the united states. iran reports it released her because of concern that she might have cancer and after somebody paid a half million dollars in bail. so far sarah shourd has not talked about her 13 months in captivity but another american woman is telling bus her ordeal. she is the journalist who spent more than three months in iranian prison on charges of spying. >> when i was taken there >> shepard: she says the iranians kept her in solitary confinement for two weeks but never physically tortured her: if you are gay and want to fight for your country, you can't be open about it. the gay part that is it's the law in america. senate republicans blocked the legislation that would have changed that

eric shawn is following this story live outside the courtroom in new york city.ll of the images come flooding back. it was one of the first really momentous attacks on behalf of al-qaida, and now there is a person who is on trial for it today. tell us about it. >> reporter: yeah, martha, three years before 9/11 those bombings of two embassies in africa, and the man who is accused of being behind it and part of it of building the bombs that blew up the buildings is smiling and laughing at some of the judge's joke. he was allegedly a bodyguard at one point for osama bin laden. he's accused of building the bombs for one of those embassy. in court this morning the potential jurors were questioned by the judge. so far 18 people have been excused. the judge so far has kept 37 for the jurors that they need. they are asked questions about terrorism, their feelings about terrorism and the like. at one point the defendant stood up and when he was introduced and looked at the potential jurors and smiled at them. giving a starring role in the potential trial will be osama bi
