the hertz deal values dollar thrifty at $50.88 based on tonight's closing prices. avis-budget is offering the equivalent of $53.20 per share. each of them is a mix of cash and stock. dollar thrifty stock is trading below both offers as the market is uncertain about a deal getting down. a big dollar thrifty shareholder with more than 7% of the stock says he will vote against the lower priced hertz offer this week. earlier in the program we mentioned the new high for gold today. it wasn't the only safe haven that was attracting buyers. bond buyers drove down the yield on the benchmark ten-year government bond to 2.47%, its lowest since january of 2009. and that's tonight's "market focus." test. >> tom: this may be the best september for u.s. stocks in more than two generations. it has been even more profitable for investors in emerging markets. tonight's word on the street is "frontier." debra reports for thestreet.com, and she joins us from the nasdaq. welcome to "nightly business report." nice to see you. >> thanks for having me. >> tom: so many investors are famil

avis budget upped its offer to just above that of hertz. the avis offer totals $1.35 billion in cash and stock. based upon tonight's closing prices, it values dollar thrifty at $47.40 per share. hertz has offered about $1.1 billion in cash and stock, giving dollar shareholders $41 per share. all three stocks were high, but the two wanting to do the buying, avis and hertz, outperformed the target of their affections, dollar thrifty. mariner energy was very active after an energy rig exploded in the gulf, which we reported earlier. mariner is being bought by apache for just over $23 per share. it closed just below that price today on more than 2times average volume. the fight between h.p. and dell for 3par may be over, but speculation over what may be the next data deal continues. this trio has been running hot since the bidding for 3par began two and a half weeks ago. compellent was up another 18.5%, its highest price since march. commvault is at a new all-time high. isilon systems is at prices last seen three and a half years ago. finally,

dollar thrifty shareholders rejected the buyout offer from hertz. a competing and higher-priced offer is on the table from avis. the object of the buying interest, dollar thrifty, saw little movement in its stock today. but hertz dropped almost 9% after being turned down by dollar shareholders. avis stock was up fractionally. avis says it will launch its offer within ten business days of the hertz deal being rejected. the september rally for the market has been impressive. the leaders include companies closely linked to the global economy and the construction business. caterpillar was the best performing dow component this month, up almost 21%. alcoa was up more than 18%. its earnings are due out in a week. and home depot rounded out the best three with a 14% gain in september. and that is tonight's "market focus." >> susie: expect to keep paying 44 cents for first class stamps next year. the postal service wanted to increase the rate by two cents beginning in january, but today, the independent panel that oversees the post office denied that reques
