new models like the buick regal are helping, but critics argue g.m.'s overall car portfolio still lags many of its rivals. internationally, china has been a hot spot, and buick is the top-selling brand there. but, schrager warns, g.m. could easily lose its edge in china. >> international markets, unlike the u.s. and japan, which are relatively stable, are quite volatile. and so, market shares can change much quicker than you would expect in the u.s. and japan. >> reporter: today's i.p.o. reduces the stakes the u.s. treasury, canadian government, and the united auto workers union have in g.m. jack ablin, chief investment officer for harris private bank, thinks that helps the company shed its "government motors" moniker, but not entirely. >> i think that there are a lot of management and union and government issues circling around this and, you know, there are other ways to play autos without having to get involved in g.m. >> reporter: and one of those ways could be ford. that stock closed at around $16 a share today, a lot less expensive than g.m. >> di

gm has gotten rid of four brands, saturn, hummer and pontiac and they are focusing on buick and cadillac and gmc and chevy. but they have to regain some market share. they have been steadily losing to ford and it's up to them to regain the public trust in their automobiles. it's been six years since gm turned a profit for a full year, allen. >> they got a lot riding on the volt, no pun intended, riding on. the volt the electric car that's really their mainstay right now for the future. >> reporter: that's one of the big focuses right now. you are going to see that out of all automakers looking for the hybrid and trying to come up with all-electric vehicles to turn away from the focus on fossil fuel attention. but overall, gm has to show that its cars are indeed on par with toyota and honda and hyundai and ford. if we can gain that it will gain the public trust and we'll see its stock continue to go further but right now probably going to hang in the $3 3 to $35 range where it is now for some time going forward. >> thank you, jason brooks. good to see you. >>> it's not what anybody wants

buick one of the favorite luxury brands there in china. how much of their success is pinned on being a global company rather than purely a domestic one? >> certainly china is a very critical growth market for general motors. the market is growing at about 40% a year in china which is now the largest car market in the world in terms of sales volume. by the way, the most fascinating thing to me, maria, is the percentage of cars that people buy in china that they buy with cash as opposed to credit, it's 90%, which is remarkable. you know, on the other hand, gm has big problems in europe. europe has been a money loser for general motors for a listening time. they had to fix their european operations. and that's not going to be done in a year. so that's going to be a drag on the company for a while. >> and gm is taking a lot on the electric car, the volt. do you think it has a bright future? have you driven a volt? >> i haven't. but i'll say a couple of things about the volt. first of all, you know, it is totally irrelevant to general motors' f

police say a white buick sedan crashed into another car here. the suspects fled on foot. initially couldn't find the suspects. officers pulled out heavy weapons and called in at least one canine unit and looked underneath porches and homes before cuffing three people. this began at 1:30 in the morning when oakland police attempted to stop the driver of the vehicle. the driver took off and took oakland and chp officers on a chase that reached speeds up to 100 miles an hour and on to the bay bridge. he got off and headed back to oakland. there could be another reason why drivers do not want to talk to police. they could be responsible for seven armed street robberies that began around 7:00 last night. they also might be connected to a home invasion robbery that happened within the time frame another other robberies. we saw lot at the scene. what we didn't see was weapons used. we need to call the police to ask why they believe the same people are responsible for the street robberies. reporting live in oakland kraig debro ktvu channel 2 news. >>> concord police shot a pit bu

if you look at all their recent product introductions, the new buicks and lacrosse and look at the cadillac versions they've been doing, the cars are selling really, really well. they've been flying off the lots. one thing gh has learned how to do is make cars that people actually want to buy. in terms of things like dependability, they have some work to do in that department. ford motor company has become world-class on dependability. their cars they are turning out are as good as anything from gm toyota and honda. gm can do that but not consistently yet. it's not not like people talking about 20 years ago. >> it's unfair to talk about how american made cars suck. >> absolutely. they don't. not anymore. chrysler still has a lot of work to do. they are doing major turnarounds. they unveiled a whole slew of redesigned products in l.a. that look better than old stuff. gm in particular has learned a lesson how to make cars that you look at and say, i want to get one of those. when you drive it and get inside, it's really more surprising. >> peter knows this because he tries out everything that
