cnn's gloria borger and nbc's kelly o'donnell and " the chicago tribune's" clarence page. first up, president obama returns to washington and right back to reality. a new poll matching him against an unnamed republican candidate in six states he carried has him down an average of 18 points from his 2008 number. so now more than ever republicans see the 2012 nomination as a prize well worth fighting for. and right now this fall is when they're making the big choice to go or not go. there are two paths to the nomination. first some will run as the best unobama as his opposite. opposite in gut appeal. republicans might choose sarah palin who would be red hot compared to today's cool obama. or who's a more seasoned manager? like mitt romney governor haley barbour or governor mitch daniels? then because obama's clearly vulnerable on big spending, g.o.p. deficit hawks like newt gingrich tim pawlenty and john thune. but there's another path to the nomination. this way of thinking goes, don't try to be unobama. assume -- play strongly to the christian conservatives who are vying f

our own kelly o'donnell has more from the hill tonight. good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. the pressure really ratcheted up today when some key republicans said they would block approval of that treaty. and they say there's just not enough time to work out differences with the white house in the few weeks remaining in this congress. that is a blow to one of the president's signature foreign policy issues. flanked by the top senators on foreign relations, today secretary of state hillary clinton's raised voice sent a message of urgency. >> for anyone to think that we can postpone it or we can avoid it, is -- i'm afraid vastly underestimating the continuing threat. >> reporter: a threat that evokes a cold war fear of the soviet union. it was such a vivid part of american life. until the first start nuclear arms treaty in 1991. but that deal expired last december. so the u.s. can't officially track how many warheads russia has now. >> we need to get our inspectors back into russia after a gap of nearly a year. >> reporter: there

we saw in wilmington, delaware, christine o'donnell. she told us she is not a witch in that campaign ad. she's in deep trouble in delaware. but she's doing some campaign ing in cleveland, ohio, we saw the president and the vice president and ohio is critical for the democrats. very close races. but the republicans suspect they have an advantage in those contests in ohio. no state is more popular than nevada because harry reid and sharron angle. harry reid the senate majority leader. jessica yellin is in las vegas. both of these candidates should be no surprise. they were very busy today. you're getting new information. what are you picking up? >> first of all, both candidates have been stumping to get out the vote. the campaign phone banks have been on overdrive. this one is simply so close. election officials in nevada tell us about 65% of everyone who will vote has already voted. either through early voting or with absentee ballots. here's something we know from history. on election day this nevada, more republicans are likely to turn
