russ had a difficult one. as many of our colleagues will remember, russ and i opposed soft money, the unlimited corporate and labor donations to political parties that we believed were compromising the integrity of congress, and we were a nuisance on the subject. russ' opponent in 1998 was outspending him on television, and the race became tighter. it reached a point where most observers, democrats and republicans, expected him to lose. the democratic party pleaded with russ to let it spend soft money on his behalf. russ refused. he risked his seat, the job he loved because his convictions were more important to him than any personal success. i think he is one of the most admirable people i've ever met in my life. we've had a lot of experiences together. we fought together for many things, important things, and we fought many times on opposite sides. we have been honored together and scorned together. we have traveled abroad together. we couldn't be further apart in our views on the wars in iraq and afghanista

russ, we'll start with you. you can say i don't want to answer too, russ. >> frankly, i don't know where it's going to end. where i hope we get started is on a far more sophisticate the debate about domestic intelligence and privacy and so forth. i think we've tended towards bumper stickers on issues that are incredibly complex. i give all the credit in the world to the marco foundation who foresaw this six years ago, i think, and try to engender the debate and didn't get traction really. to some degree that was okay. we were largely dealing with plots that were overseas and people radicalized overseas, and most of the activity was overseas, and now as i mentioned with the foreign and domestic divide not meaning much anymore, and now u.s. citizens, u.s. persons being directly involved, how much of that information do you want people like me, 30 years intelligence community to have access to, and i don't think there's any,not an obvious answer. i mean, there does need to be a sophisticated debate in the country i

we're going to use russ feingold as prove the progressive pitch doesn't work. the reason they went down is voters looked at what their party did. the party hasn't been tough about protecting social security. the party hasn't dun enough to nail down the abuses of the big banks. as long as that continues the voters will punish the party. so rewarding the people who made sure the party didn't do more to me is insanity. >> richard, is the whole problem the world centrist? are they really in the center of to country the people that are being called centrists in washington? >> well, you know, that's a great point. we just did another piece today. take zz. we have a proposal out, a very right-wing proposal from the two leaders of the deficit commission who can't get their commission to go along with it. this proposals says we should cut social security so we don't have to tax the wealthy, and if anything cut taxes on the wealthy. now polls have shone wn that overwhelmingly voters would rather protect the social security benefits, and they would rather see the wealthy
