so what is open data? open date it is structured data. spreadsheets, a tabular form. it is not .pdf or word documents, and because of that, it is a machine readable, and that is an important part of it here you can create applications and analysis out of it. there is a lot you can do. open did it is also freely available to the public at no charge with very minimal restrictions. it also respects existing privacy and security laws that are in place, whether local, state, or federal, and it is really a proactive disclosure of government information. departments and agencies are for one actively putting structured machine-readable data out into the public. so why is open did it important? if improve transparency and accountability. journalists have access to more information. artists, technology community -- generally, anyone interested in government has structured information they can use for various reasons. it also stimulates economic development. we have seen a number of companies that have been substantiated both here locally and elsewhere. an example i would like t

it is not the department heads, not the city's data, it is the public's data. we have an obligation, i would say, to push it out to the public to make it available and useful to the public. when you do that, it can help the department and city, but most importantly, it can help the public. it can be very empowering. a lot of what we do, whether it is abating graffiti, picking up trash, filling pot holes, improves someone's quality of life. when a neighborhood group is getting together to see how they can improve the conditions in their neighborhood, it is hard for them to do so if they do not know what the crime looks like in the neighborhood, where they have the legal dumping problems. community groups can then have real data to base their solutions on. it is very empowering in that respect. it can help us avoid a lot of cumbersome public record requests, rather than waiting for people to come to us to pull data out, we push it to them. they do not have to come and ask us for it, which for us to track it down. it is available for them to use. and finally, the

this whole question of data i think has or needs a very close look by the water management data. when you take the wrapper off of this you see it has lots of warts on it, let me talk about the,nrcs, in the west. i know you all have your own. but i saw a persuasive speech by randy who is quite properly convincing. changes all the way from stainless steel pillows to ten gallons and black pillows of this. vegetationle changes, the lesson here, i think in general and this applies to,usgs, and national weather, we need to make sure the networks are in good enough shape to make these decisions. they don't cost a lot of money but you need to know the data out there is quite flawed and we need to take care of it and make sure in the future it's doing what it needs to for us. let me expand this. there's a very nasty fight going on on the future of some satellites right now. the fight involved climate centers on these centers and certain governments want to toss them in favor of weather sensors. weather is important but climate also is. it effects all of us. no data means no good research

we plan to continue to capture data from the remaining schools. in total, there are 59 schools where there is yellow bus transportation. the transportation department, although they do not capture the names of students, do capture information about the numbers that get on and off at every stop. we know about 3300 students ride the bus. the responses from the school capture information for 2800 of those writers. -- riders. while it is not 100%, it does give a general sense, and we will continue to capture information. we created pin maps that we hope will tell lot more than quantitative data. they tell a story that it -- they tell a story visually. this first pin map shows the students -- where the students live that ride the bus in the morning only. because there are some students to catch a bus just in the morning. there are some who just use a bus in the afternoon. and there are some who use a bus morning and afternoon. so, the students to ride the bus just in the morning -- it is about 11% of the students. these red dots on the map show you whe
