chris sanchez did just that. she joins us from an elementary school in san jose this evening. hello, chris. >> reporter: hi there, tom. this might be one of the few places where governor brown's budget is being well received, and where it sells the least. he said he would spare k through 12 funding. that's good news, except these kids hopefully will go to college. and then it might be a different story. >> it's excellent. it's excellent news. i'm really glad he did. >> reporter: after years of budget cuts and ballooning public school class sizes, parents are getting good news, no cuts to k through 12 funding. >> definitely. will wouldn't want to see is any worse. >> reporter: she has 30 kids in her 2nd-grade class. and two part-time teachers last year. >> they need normal seats. they need a routine, especially at that age. >> reporter: while public school children are getting a break, other campuses will not be as lucky. governor brown plans to cut $1 billion between the two, and that's a tough pill to swallow for students already paying more, and fighting to get into classes

chris sanchez is live at san jose city hall with more on what happened. chris? >> hi there, jessica. you know, san jose is not in a unique position trying to keep the local dollars local. what they did today was allow the city to act immediately if they find themselveses in the position of losing their redevelopment agency. at any city hall, some meetings seem to go on forever. but this one in san jose lasted less than an hour. the council voted unanimously to give the redevelopment agency and housing department the power to spend its money before the state takes it away. >> we're trying to complete the projects that we've started, make good on the promises we've made. >> redevelopment dollars helped to build the hp pavilion and helped draw business to north san jose. >> we rebuilt downtown. we spent $2 billion over the last three decades. we helped create jobs. we've taken a literally a swamp area and made it into a premier industrial area with 80,000 jobs. >> yet, governor brown wants to strip the agencies of $1.7 billion and put the money toward the state's $

nbc bay area's chris sanchez says they may not know it because of a legality. >> earthquake preparedness is on her mind after feeling a recent earthquake in her apartment near the san jose state campus. >> we thought it was somebody running upstairs because it usually shakes so we didn't think it was an earthquake. after the earthquake we went downstairs into the garage and we were looking around for on what we're standing. >> reporter: she has reason to be concerned. she lives in a soft story building. apartments on top with parking underneath. in an earthquake those buildings pancake whatever is on the bottom level. >> in an earthquake we would expect that there might be 150,000 uninhabitable housing units. two-thirds of those might be from soft story buildings. it's a very large problem. >> reporter: san jose state researchers found 2,600 soft story buildings. in 2003 when the san jose researchers did their survey, they identified risky soft story buildings by address but in the eight years since that sura was done, the people who live at those addresses and those who own buildings at

chris sanchez is live with why and what your kids are doing and why it may not be enough.ew year. >> happy new year to you as well. usually when you mention kids, back in my day kids just played. playing sports is not enough to reach that guideline of 60 minutes of activity every day. here's how we know. researchers looked at 200 kids age 7 to 14 who were participating in organized sports. we are talking about soccer, softball, baseball. they watched them and see how often they were active. one out of four kids were meading the guideline. for girls it was worse. only 2% of them med that guideline. almost half of the activity in practice is standing around, not even running around and plague. only about half of the time is spent in moderate to vigorous activity. 30 minutes of practice time is spent standing around. you don't need to pull your kids out of the forts. they do keep active. that's over competition. all of the kids take the field and whatever they are playing instead of the sidelines. the coach may want only the winners to play. talk to the coach about getting al

i'm chris sanchez with rob mayeda.'s unusual for us to have this much fog south and east. >> in in the south bay we haven't had this kind of dense fog setting up. even in san jose we have a dense fog advisory bay area wide. this morning through 9:00, temperatures in the 40s to near 50. that's one benefit of the fog, our temperatures oornts too chilly. visibility, quick mass, .06 miles, about 300 foot visibility. san francisco, san mateo and a quarter mile or less in san jose. very foggy start to the morning. we'll be rain-free. our friends in the pacific northwest getting flooding rains. stern washington, maybe about a half foot of rain building down today. we'll be looking at drizzle with the fog, patchy fog into the afternoon. with all the extra moisture in terms of the low clouds, we're going to be running a little cooler today. once we get the hazy sunshine, we won't see temperatures near 70 today. i think we're going to be looking at 50s to low 60s for highs today. tomorrow, dry, a little warmer. look at that seve
