north platte, nebraska, 16 below.ffalo, new york. 20 below. >> there's likely going to be snow and ice as far south as texas, and all of that is going to head toward the east coast by the middle of next week. >> reporter: new york has already dug out of 36 inches of snow just this month. boston has had 55 inches. minneapolis, 55. one heavy snow fall there collapsed the city metrodome roof. snow has led to the cancellation of 24,000 flights in january alone. the two feet of snow in chicago hasn't been a problem. but it has been bitterly cold. only three days above freezing in january. the fewest in 34 years. and it's not just places where you expect snow. atlanta has had six inches. there's even been snow in las vegas. experts all this arctic oscillation, and blame it for the extreme weather that's dipped as far south as florida. >> instead of flowing quickly from west to east, it's tone on this north/south direction and it's bringing frequent cold air, arctic outbreaks into the u.s. >> reporter: and if this week's sto

territory up to the yellowstone river and west of the bighorn mountains and south down to the north platte. so the crazy horse people and the sitting bull people did not go outside of that territory, and they were doing exactly what the treaty granted them a perpetual right to do. unless they would give up that right at some future date by the formal agreement of three-quarters of the male population. and so they were not engaged in hostile acts with the united states, and thousands of indians were not killed during that period. there was very little warfare. the problem began in 1874 with the discovery of gold in the black hills where the united states at that point -- the first thing they discovered was that the black hills were not, as they hoped, in wyoming. they were actually in south dakota right in the sioux reservation. so it created a problem. and the solution to the problem was to extinguish their title in the sioux reservation. and that led to military operations to force them onto agencies and to various other efforts to compel them to surrender that territory. when crazy horse

we've got video out of north platte, nebraska, we've picked up five to seven inches of snow, that's headed this way. you can see from oklahoma to st. louis, now stretching into cincinnati, we've got this snow making its way toward us. here's what we've got as far as watches and warnings. nine inches in columbia. st. louis, eight inches. hastings, nebraska, six inches of snow and the watches and warnings stretch from texas into boston, a wide area. here's what we're expecting. we're looking for the storm system to come out of texas. it's spreading snow sfr tulsa to st. louis. by thursday afternoon, the snow spreads into pittsburgh and moves along the coast and by friday morning, it's up into new england by friday night. snowfall amounts, cincinnati, three to six inches, new york city, generally three to five inches for the morning rush. boston, you'll get three to five, maybe eight inches of snow. philadelphia picks up two to four. washington, d.c., less than an inch. ann? >> all right, al, thank you so much. chinese president, hu jintao, makes his way to capitol hill, following a star-stud

this huge territory south of yellowstone between the missouri and big horn mountains down to the north platte, the buffalo were all killed until the indians were taken off the reservation and then it didn't take long. so i would say that red cloud made peace in 1868, and crazy horse didn't. he didn't sign that treaty. he didn't accept the rations from the government. nor was he compelled to under the treaty. he just took a different road as long as he could. >> i'm sure you've seen some reenactments. i know that white people have done customers last and a few times and it's been in the movies a lot. but i also understand there's some indian reenactments now. did you see them and could you sort of compare the version? >> i have not seen the indian reenactments. that's a new thing. pine ridge, they do do it out at the little bighorn and have been doing it for many years. there's a large community of custer buffs who are fascinated by this, by this spectacle of this war. it must've been one of the most astonishing things to witness, thousands of people on horseback riding hell-bent come in the e
