we have reports tonight from don teague in oklahoma city and dean reynolds in chicago. first, don. don teague, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, harry. downtown oklahoma city looks a bit like a frozen ghost town. the snowplows still haven't come through, most of the city after one of the biggest single day snowfalls in this city's history. more than a foot of snow here, 18 inches in parts of oklahoma from this massive winter storm. across oklahoma, just venturing outside was treacherous. >> the way it is, i don't know, the whole place is going to be shut down, the whole city. >> reporter: with the furiously falling snow came bitter cold temperatures in single digits and whiteout conditions from 50 mile per hour winds. >> my feet are like numb as well as my hands and the rest of my extremities. >> reporter: meteorologists are already calling this the great blizzard of 2011. milwaukee is expecting 16 inches of snow, 13 inches in st. louis and 14 inches in indianapolis. a quarter inch of freezing rain can down power lines. forecasters say at least that much could acc

cbs news correspondent don teague is in oklahoma city this morning. zzard for the state of oklahoma. the local forecasters here are saying this is one of the worst storms in the state's history. here in oklahoma city, you can see how bad this is. 30 plus-mile-an-hour winds. the temperatures are down in the teens and single digits, and they've already had several inches of snow. they're expecting as much as 18 inches of snow. hard for the plows and the snow blowers to keep up. if you look at a shot down here the rest of downtown, it's basically a ghost town. most people heeding the warnings staying off of the streets today. they expect travel to be trouble for at least a couple of days here because this snow is going to stick around, and it is going to drift on to the roads. a big mess, and it's coming your way. >> jeff, great. all right. don teague in oklahoma city. don, thank you very much. that storm will hit the northeast. heavy snow and ice is head ford this region. cbs news correspondent wit johnson is in philadelphia this morning with all of that

but don teague reports not everything went according to the play book or the song book. >> reporter:he busiest day ever at dallas fort worth international airport. 60,000 departures, mostly super bowl fans rushing home after a week with below-zero windchills and two snow and ice storms. sheets of ice falling from the roof of cowboy stadium injured six workers friday. the horrible weather dimming what was supposed to be texas's time to shine. >> things were a little disorganized in my eyes as far as the... dallas's preparation for this. >> reporter: the snake-bit super bowl plagued with problems. one of the biggest snafus, 1,250 temporary seats not ready by game time after being deemed unsafe. >> it was terribly mismanaged and we're just beside ourselves. >> reporter: the n.f.l. found alternate seats for most but 400 fans holding $900 tickets had to watch the game on t.v. from a room with no view of the field. >> i roughly spent a little over $10,000 for this weekend and got a very disappointment out of this today. >> reporter: the n.f.l. says it will invite the affected fans to a fut

cbs news correspondent don teague is in dallas this morning. ng. >> reporter: good morning, this is a miserable day in texas and oklahoma, and a miserable commute here in the dallas area. i'm going to step out so you can see what's going on here. these are folks trying to get to work on one side of your screen and on the other side you can see the freeway has been shut down because of the snow and ice that has piled up. it has made driving treacherous here. this has been going on since tuesday in oklahoma. more heavy snow in places like tulsa and oklahoma city. they've still been digging out from the big storms that came through there last week, and then in other parts of texas and the texas panhandle wind chills of minus 26 degrees as the snow blew through there late last night. here in the dfw area, we're below zero with wind chills now, and they have canceled flights at dfw airport. don teague, cbs news, dallas. >>> investigators are trying to figure out what caused a tractor-trailer to collide with two school buses in mississippi. police say

in oklahoma cbs news correspondent don teague reported road ice two inches thick. >> two trucks off the road in front of me. it's just chaos. >> reporter: snow collapsed a building in massachusetts and a hardware store in minnesota. >> i run back into the back room and said, "hit the floor! the building's coming down!" >> reporter: people were scraping in new jersey, chiseling in indiana, and slipping in new york. >> are you all right? >> reporter: in indianapolis, a man was saved inches from the white river after sliding down a frozen embankment. and in austin, texas, the weather forced rolling power blackouts and at one intersection, it had predictable results. they lifted the blizzard warning in chicago this afternoon and immediately replaced it with a wind chill warning, and for good reason because the wind chills in chicago tonight are supposed to be between 20 and 30 degrees below zero. harry. >> smith: wow, dean, that picture of you on lake shore drive is just unbelievable. have they made any progress in clearing those cars? >> reporter: the lake shore drive is still closed tonig

don teague is in arlington the site of the super bowl just outside dallas. good morning don. >> reporter: yeah. 18 degrees here right now and trying to keep a positive attitude about this. seriously! we went to bed last night and they said maybe an inch of snow overnight. we woke up this morning. most of the dallas area has 6 inches of snow on the ground now and it is still snowing. as you can imagine, that is causing havoc out on the roads. they are not equipped to deal with this kind of snowstorm here. they happen occasionally but they just only have a few trucks and a few sanders so they are out there doing what they can but strask massively backed up on the interstates and causing problems at the airport. things have slowed down to a crawl at dfw airport. love field we are told is closed right now. we don't know when they are going to open. but, obviously, the snow while they were expecting a little bit of snow they weren't expecting a lot. the fourth day schools have been closed here in much of texas and this event is happening across texas. there is fre

cbs news correspondent don teague is in houston outside the hospital where she is being treated. don, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, erica. in the weeks since gabrielle giffords was shot in the head during an assassination attempt doctors have termed her response miraculous. a turning point. on monday, less than a month after suffering a gunshot wound to the brain, giffords made a simple request. >> i was having breck fest with her a few days ago and she asked me for toast. >> reporter: in an exclusive interview, gifed ords chief of staff told katie couric the qap congresswoman is making a miraculous. >> it's just very encouraging. >> reporter: the last public update was almost two weeks ago when doctors said a breathing tube in giffords throat prevented her from speaking. it's unclear whether the tube has been removed or if doctors have given giffords a speaking valve. either way, experts say speaking at all is a big deal. >> the fact that she is able to talk really tells us that a very complex, perhaps the most complex function in the brain is starting to come back onl

first, though, cbs news correspondent don teague is in houston this morning with more on this story. ter: good morning, erica. gabrielle giffords has been undergoing intensive rehabilitation here in houston for most of the past month. she can now speak with and communicate with friends and family. it's great progress, but experts say only time will reveal how much long-term damage she may have suffered. in the nearly six weeks since gabrielle giffords was shot in the head, doctors have called her progress nothing short of remarkable. just last week giffords spoke asking for toast with breakfast. then she mouthed the words to twinkle, twinkle little star. she also took part in a birthday celebration for her husband, astronaut mark kelly, who is currently training for his upcoming shuttle mission. >> she was able to sing mark happy birthday. you know, mouth him happy birthday. they're using the singing therapy, which uses a little bit different part of the brain, to help sort of retrain her brain to speak again. >> reporter: but as encouraging as gich orders' progress appears, doctors c
