st. francis church behind me marked the official end from st. francis expulsion from the national luthren church. 20 years ago, along with the united luthren church bucked their national policy by ordaining non-celibate gay and lesbian pastors. the evangelical lutheran church put the church on trial and suspended them. but the two churches continue putting pressure on the national church. in 2009, they decided to welcome sexual minorities. this month, 141 member st. francis congregation voted to ratify a new constitution, completing its final step to rejoin the church and today the church celebrated its reunion with the national body. >> we kind of doubted it. it kind of came quicker than we thought although 20 years in one sense is a long time. but you're changing a 4.7 million denomination, evangelical lutheran church in america. >> reporter: first united however is still deciding whether or not they will accept its invitation to rejoin the national body. we'll have more on the culture of the historical significance on the services this afterno
