i'm sydnie kohara. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. the time now is 4:30. we start this tuesday on a tough note. the search is on in new zealand for more victims of a powerful earthquake. at least 65 people are dead others trapped in collapsed buildings. it was a 6.3 quake that struck near the city of christchurch during the day on tuesday. sharon chin has the latest from our san francisco newsroom. >> reporter: good morning. this morning, new zealand's prime minister is describing scenes of utter devastation. >>> devastation. rescue workers are digging through the rubble desperately searching for any survivors of the 6.3 magnitude quake. this is the second major quake to hit christ church in five months. this one was less powerful but caused far more damage because it hit in the middle of a workday closer to the crowded streets of downtown. tall buildings crumbled and roads buckled. the mayor has declared a state of emergency. >> the most frightening thing of my entire life. >> hard to describe what was a vibrant city two hours ago now is in ruins. >> repo

i am sydnie kohara. >> i hope you are sleeping in. i am frank mallicoat. time is 5:30.ra is moving to hold on to money for a new 49ers stadium and let governor brown know he should knit not take it away. why -- not take it away. why $40 million is at stake. good morning. >> reporter: good morning frank. yeah, the santa clara city council says it has taken years to put together a new plan for the new stadium and doesn't want to lose funding its message to governor gerry brown is don't cut our redevelopment money. they is already committed up to $40 million in redevelopment funds for a new 49ers football stadium near great america. without the money there is no plan b for funding, the $937 million stadium. the santa clara city council says it will put in writing the right to keep it, it put together the plan long before the governor proposed cutting costs. santa clara city leaders say they plan to issue $26 million in bonds, and borrow the rest from the team. the city has plans to take this up at the regular meeting tomorrow night and establish itself as the stadium autho

. >> i'm sydnie kohara. thanks for joining us. your time is 5:00. >>> this is decision day for the cal athletics department. christin ayers is in berkeley, where word is expected today on the fate of five sports. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we should know whether or not those five sports will be saved by about noon today. this is a big day for both athletes and alumni waiting to hear whether the university will eliminate those five cal sports teams in order to save the university money. the teams are baseball, men's rugby, men's gymnastics, women's lacrosse, and women's gymnastics. the campus plans to cut the teams originally in june. that is, until an online fundraising effort called savecalsports.com stepped in claiming it had raised about $15 million of the $25 million needed to save all five of those teams. the group brought the university its blueprint for saving the teams including baseball in the middle of its possible final season a couple of weeks ago. they got big support from the likes of the san francisco

i'm sydnie kohara. >> i'm elizabeth wenger.ime now is 6:30. >>> we are following breaking news right now in san francisco. two fires break out just blocks away from each other in the castro district. we understand that several streets are blocked off in that area. christin ayers is at hartford and 17th, where one of the fires is burning right now. good morning, christin. what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning. firefighters have been able to put out this fire just a few moments ago but there have been evacuations and as you can see behind me here, still a very active fire scene. this is one of two fires that broke out within the same hour and within a two-block radius of each other. authorities do have the arson task force out here although they are not confirming that this was indeed arson. still too early to tell when it comes it. that authorities did just tell me, i spoke to the chief of operations here, and he spoke to me and told me that there was also a third fire that they heard reported, this was a more minor fire.

this g the body of a yo >>> good afternoon, i'm sydnie kohara. >> i'm allen martin. we begin with breaking news because this morning the body of a young boy was found in the same canal where crews have been searching for 4-year-old juliani cardenas. the body was found in the delta- mendota canal, that is near the town of justine, about 16 miles south of patterson just west of los banos. a worker at the canal spotted body about 7:30 this morning. so far deputies have not identified the child. they are going to wait for dna testing for that. but, the merced county sheriff's department says the clothing matches the description of what juliani was wearing when he went missing. so far, still no sign of jose rodriguez. he is the ex-boyfriend of juliani's mother and the man police say kidnapped juliani. now, a news conference is set to get under way soon in patterson the town where the boy was last seen. we will join that once it begins. but to recap what has happened over the past couple of weeks. juliani's grandmother told police the boy was taken right out of her arms by

. >> i'm sydnie kohara. your time is 6:00. some closures to tell you about as you begin your thursday morning commute. these closures in san francisco. let's go to elizabeth. >> reporter: it's right there at the intersection of geary boulevard and arguello. these were some pictures taken just a short while ago. this is a very popular intersection. so far we have not seen any huge delays. they have a wide radius blocked off. at least three blocks of geary boulevard shut down this morning. it has been for at least four hours. it will remain closed between 2nd and jordan so as far as alternates go, california street, fulton, you're going to want to avoid this area for a while. also, several muni lines impacted as well including the very popular 38 geary. and 33 stanyan. as you saw from this picture, this was a very awful accident. fatal accident one person killed. looks like a head-on collision and police tell us that the driver of one of those cars actually ran a red light. they are doing a possible dui investigation, as well. s

i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm sydnie kohara. thanks so much for joining us.r time coming up on 6:30. >>> the future of public safety in san jose could come down to this, a crucial meeting today determining whether hundreds of police officers will be laid off. let's go to anne makovec who joins us now from city hall with the worst-case scenario if no deal is reached. anne, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, mayor chuck reed laid that out earlier this month. and in the meantime, all of the unions here in san jose have been stewing trying to figure out how to avoid some of the cuts that he has been proposing. it's the tenth straight year of red ink here in san jose. and these unions have been asked time and time again to make cuts. here is that worst-case scenario, though, if they don't, according to mayor chuck reed. 349 police layoffs and 145 firefighter layoffs because of that $110 million deficit they are looking at. so he is wanting all of the unions again to make a 10% reduction in their pay and benefits. he cannot impose, though, these cuts on

. >> i'm sydnie kohara. thanks so much for joining us.5:30. >>> dozens are dead from a powerful earthquake that has rocked new zealand. the magnitude 6.3 quake centered near christchurch has killed at least 65 people. sharon chin is in our san francisco newsroom now with the latest on rescue efforts there. sharon. >>> reporter: good morning. rescue crews are working in the dark and drizzle desperately trying to get to people trapped in the rubble. the people of christchurch are saying not again. this is the second major quake to hit the city in five months. this one was less powerful but caused far more damage because it hit in the middle of a workday closer to the crowded streets of downtown. tall buildings crumbled and roads buckled. the mayor has declared a state of emergency. >> most frightening thing of my entire life. >> hard to describe what was a vibrant city two hours ago is now crumbled. >> reporter: workers are using cranes to rescue people stranded in buildings. emergency workers say they know of at least two of a dozen studen

. >> i'm sydnie kohara. they were just cleaning their home when they stumbled upon a potentially explosive discovery that led to evacuations and the bomb squad being called in. a family found five or six grenades in a paper bag in san francisco earlier today. police responded to that potrero hill neighborhood around 8:00 this morning. they couldn't determine if those grenades were real or fake so they called in bomb technicians and shut down streets in the area. >> what we're understanding, the owner of the building was a 92-year-old man that passed away sometime ago and the family was now cleaning out the garage of all his personal effects. >> the bomb squad robot gathered the grenades and took them away. no word if they were real. police dogs sniffed the garage to make sure there were no other devices. the surrounding streets are back open now after being shut down for about two hours. >>> three fires very close to each other and around the same time, they were in san francisco's castro district this morni

i am sydnie kohara. your time is 4:30. breaking news in san francisco this morning. right now arson investigators on the scene of another fire near the castro district. let's go to sharon. i understand these flames broke out up the street from a series of suspicious fires we reported on last week. >> reporter: that's right. good morning sydnie. we don't know if there is any relation to the string of fires but let me tell you what is going on here. this fire started a two alarm fire 3:00 a.m. this morning. we are looking at 390 core bet. flames jumped next door to a home on the other side 1370 clayton on the other side of the block. it appears it broke out neighbors say a police patrol driving by noticed the flames and pounded on their door to get some people out. looks like most people are out there still checking to make sure they got everyone out of the two homes effected. we have some reports there were six people who had to evacuate but it appears everybody got out safely no injuries at this point we know of. they don't know the cause of the fire exactly, where i

. >> i'm sydnie kohara. good morning, everyone. your time is 4:30. >>> topping our news this morning, about 50 bay area students and adults are recovering after they got sick at an outdoor school and retreat in marin county and had to be sent home. the children were visiting from three elementary schools in the east bay. they have been staying at the walker creek ranch. it's a campus of the marin county office of education just outside petaluma. the flu-like symptoms developed in the afternoon. >> we had some kind of viral flu bug go where students were getting sick to their stomach and mainly vomiting, maybe a little bit of diarrhea, but it spread pretty quick, particularly through some cabins. >> as a precaution, other kids with no symptoms were sent home, as well. the outdoor school principal says the source of the illness hasn't been pinpointed, but that it apparently originated from a single cabin. >>> right now, the egyptian military is rounding up journalists after they came under attack from supporters of president hosni mu
