i have been with them for about a year. i have been a regular for more than 10 years. let me highlight three main reasons in support of my appointment to this committee. first, i think i would note your attention to my professional experience. i spend about six years on wall street, 1st with merrill lynch, then i worked directly for the new york city comptroller's office where my role was to help coordinate many of the tasks and the city to issue bonds and notes. i've also worked as a financing professional for private companies, also for startups. i've negotiated contracts and settlement agreements and save companies millions of dollars. i want to continue to serve the public. for the past couple of years, i have been on the board directors for the child welfare league of america and i have been share of the audit committee. we have had a clean audits in spite of challenging financial times. this is a very important organization to the country and i continue to serve actively. we have three meetings per year and monthly meetings on the phone. since moving to the area,

i am having a great life. i am still called up to do a job here and there. i have to take it with a pinch of salt. i work with young actors. i was working with a terrific young actor in this movie. he is full of intensity. he is a 30 year-old. i just said to enjoy yourself. enjoy life. tavis: since we are talking of uncertainty and doubt, have certain do you have to be? is it better if you are in doubt about the roles that you choose? i cannot imagine you want to much doubt about the roles you choose to play. you want to be certain of something about the character and what you think you can do with it. >> you get a roll and think "this is going to be a winner." i cannot remember who was, but there was somebody in the 30's who was given a script, under contract with the studios. there was quite a famous star. the studio sent him a contract. he decided to walk through the film. he told his fellow actress, "i am just when to walk through this." he got nominated for an oscar. you never know. tavis: that is how this town works. >> hope uncertainty are the enemies

i am not a landscape architect. i am a member of the committee. not have the professional qualifications. i do have the community qualifications. i have several years of tenure on the council. during my time on the council, we it agitated for the landmark tree ordinance. since then, we have more than 13 trees in the city that had been landmarked. i personally assisted with some of those nominations for those landmarks. we also work on constructing an urban forest land, which was authorized for the supervisors and now has been turned over to the planning department to be added to the city's general plan. the council supported sidewalk pocket parks and the better street programs. we have participated in san francisco arbor day is which is less than two weeks from now. i believe i bring some action and institutional knowledge to the urban forest council. we have aspirations for expanding and maintaining the urban forest. thank you. >> thank you so much for being here. sandy sherwin. >> i have a resume here. good afternoon, supervisors. my name is san

i worked in the private sector for a while. i started as a volunteer. then was brought on board part- time and then full time. as many nonprofit employees do, i went on to work for the bureau of urban forestry. i have been in my position since we applied for the council appointment. i am just recently back from the municipal forestry institute. it was a week-long the leadership intensive held at the arbor day lodge and met with colleagues from across the u.s. that work for nonprofit municipalities and state agencies. it was extremely invigorating and also relieve validating to touch on a couple of initiatives that i supported. since i have been elected chair by my peers in the last year, i have been extremely cognizant of our use of time, especially the department of the environment's precious staff time that they dedicate to our meetings. one of the initiatives we were looking at was to look at our schedule and reduce our actual formal meetings and support a lot of work and informal group work where we would review our annual retreat and establish goals

i live a couple blocks from the clinic. i am a community member, friend, a supporter. i moved to san francisco a couple years ago for a job, but also because i knew san francisco to be a really special place. outside of san francisco, the world feels like it is falling apart. people are being intimidated and silence for their beliefs at an alarming rate. people who are in the most critical need are being further marginalize, pushed further out to the fringes, there needs de- prioritized compared with others. i'd like to san francisco that san francisco is a special place. i would like to think that we as a city are better than that. i joined the save lyon-martin community group a month ago. in the last month, i have seen thousands of people, patients, community members like myself, other supporters who have come out and done everything they can to support this clinic. emotions are high. i have seen people crying at the prospect of losing this critical resource. some of us have been fighting with each other over how best to save this clinic. but i have not seen anyone tu

unfortunately, i am a former member. i served in 2009 and 2010. when the chief had his summit, he handed down a guide or rules. we read we could not serve on two cabs. we had to live within a police precinct in order to serve at that station. that meant that people that live in a supervisory district may not be able to serve on the police cap that the neighborhood group serves. i am rather surprised. i did not really picked up that the police were supporting having a definition of community policing. i don't get how you can have a conversation without defining what you mean by community policing the. i won't repeat what a lot of people have said. i know karen has spoken abou t this. there is no liaison to the cab. i was a member at the agency, they lost some funding, and that person was never appointed. we don't get information from cabs any longer. i did serve on a cab, really informed. i wonder if there is still a cab. we need more trust in the police department. we need more transparency. we had a foot patrol removed while i sat on the cab. i have a great health care. i am a software engineer and have been one for over 20 years. but my doctor said to me one day, "i am not sure if i should give you a prostate exam or a breast exam." i said, "maybe we should look on the web." i know the transgender community, and i still cannot find anyone to take care of me. this friend pointed me towards. -- towards lyon-martin. they are a well educated staff, and i had a decent doctor. i wanted to this organization to exist. i sought its value. i sought is a value to people like me -- i saw its value. i saw its value to people like me and others. a year later, i was asked to be chair, so that is my history. i am the first and only transgendered person on the board. i will go into more written statements now about the state of things. lyon-martin has been on the verge of extinction many times. they have faced difficulties in getting money for services performed. as a result, they have been extremely cash poor. the board were shocked, however, to recently realize the full extent of the deterioration financially, including what

i have a strong interest in civic duties. i have lived in the city of san francisco for about 17 years. i have lived in the sunset district. there was a store your regarding twitter. the budget is in jeopardy by the governor. what this can mean four san francisco. i am very much aware that the assessment appeals board serves a vital service to the city and county with regard to evaluating both residential and commercial property. there is the high unemployment rate and the foreclosures that dropped their. the appeals that have been filed have increased significantly over the years and in 2009, 2010, there has been a threefold increase in the number of appeals. my experience, i am attorney. this is one of the requirements of this particular board. i attend the university of santa clara. i have a master's degree from the cal state university system. in my practice as an attorney, i have managed a federal agency during hearings. i have worked on contract issues. there are some questions -- construction contracts. i also have some

nationally, i think we are a little bit left in san francisco, but i think i am a socially liberal person. that is what i tend to practice what i preach. >> what did you learn campaigning for supervisor, and was there anything that surprised you? >> that is a great question. i have never run for office before. i am new to the political world. for me, the learning curve was the best he could be. there were a lot of lessons to be learned in running a race in san francisco. a few that stick in my mind -- money does matter. raising money. that is the simple, somewhat unfortunate fact of life. i think really having a message that resonates with voters, not just saying you want to be a politician, but you have to really explain why you, and i think that was really court to what we did. most importantly, the one thing i drew out of it was the hard work and other determination is the thing that will, i think, allow you to succeed more than anything else. i believe that the candidates who won this past november with the ones who worked the hardest in their races. >> what are the biggest issues fac

i started a magazine. when i got to detroit, my goal was to figure out a way to married that reporting with what they wanted me to do in graphics. i told them that if something happened, i was going. they said that was fine with them. whenever i was feeling burned -- whenever some built-in burned down out or someone was shot, i was there on the scene so that i could visually tell that story. that became a valuable skill. not a lot of people were doing that in that space at the time. >> why did you pick grambling in the first place, a historic black college? >> it was close to where i grew up. it is where my mother also went to college and where a couple of my brothers went to college. it was not my first choice. i had a wanderlust and wanted to get far away from my tiny space. i had been accepted a couple of places and even had full scholarships. my mother cannot imagine her youngest son being far away. she talked and talked until i relented and said ok. i found it to be an amazing experience in one way. i

you know, even though i don't call myself a photographer-- i call myself an artist-- i am a photographer who creates images that are basically things that are based in reality. and so when i do a monochrome, and it's just a red photograph, you know, i-- by titling it blood, people know that they're looking at a monochrome of blood rather than just red color, you know. and so i find it necessary to to give the images titles just to inform the audience. and, you know, a lot of times, the titles are something that pops into my head at the same time as the image does, and so it, ah-- but they--you know, they need each other. do you think there's a temptation to self-censor? clearly you haven't done that, but for other artists who are trying to achieve some level of marketability? i have no idea, you know. i know that it's difficult for me to keep on doing the same old thing. and, you know, if i'm going to ask the audience to-- if i'm going to put them on the spot and ask them to go the extra mile, you know, i sometimes find that i need to do the same thing and take risks myself. and so that'

i tried to explain i was in a war again. i wasn't thinking about report cards. there are a lot of exclusions when you are an immigrant coming. as a young boy growing up i remember being fascinated with the united states through the peace corps and american companies i read the history of this nation as a place that was a place full of diversity, people who had come from different parts of the world because of similar persecutions that some of us are running from but yet when you arrive at jfk or wherever you are put on this -- under this questioning where you are asked as if you are almost a criminal, your criminalize before you leave and speak to immigration to the point you don't want to tell them anything about yourself any locker. i live there for a number of years and i will wrap it up and when -- every time my trouble -- travel i am still -- i pay my taxes and particularly around tax time i get very upset when i am questions in a very inhumane way. when i am traveling if i use my new york driver's license i am ok but when i -- all of a sudden its .. the sam

i can only relate to you my personal experiences. as a community activist, i have heard many stories. there are two samaras and i could tell you about. both get city and county funding. they have a plethora of rooms at a bunch of different hotel sites, but they do not have tseo have a clear conscience about checking for bedbugs. some of their units are being responded to by property owners better than others. some property owners are doing all they can. some do not want to spend the money. some have their own past control canister in their office and want to come up and spray their own stuff, like they are the experts. that was my experience at one of the hot team rooms. because of a lack of education, i ended up moving bedbugs into a unit that was run by an agency. this agency is very aggressive and has a good control -- could pest control service, but there are tenants in the building that do not have the capacity to do their laundry every two weeks. this agency is not providing those funds. i was on the tenant council and we set aside
