good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. in the last 30 minutes we've learned more about this building which caught fire around 9:00 last night. we know now that this fire started at the bottom floor and crawled all the way to the roof via the garbage chute. within the last hour firefighters had a flare up on the roof. now ten firefighters are on fire watch. this building is located at 201 eddy street right here in san francisco. it's the franciscan towers apartment complex with 75 apartments inside. one of the residents we spoke to did not see flames, but got out as quickly as he could not knowing flames had turned this into a three-alarm blaze. >> i was in my room. and all of a sudden i smelled smoke. so i ran out of my room, the whole hallway's full of smoke. i just panicked and ran downstairs as fast as i could. >> reporter: we know right now that the american red cross is sheltering 63 people plus an additional 26 people with special needs are being housed at a different facility through the tenderloin neighborhood deve

kiet, good morning. >>> reporter: good morning.fact, an exact number of 106 police officers have gotten pink slips and that means that there will be fewer detectives to investigate nonviolent and property crimes in the city of san jose. if these police cuts go through, and it looks like they will, then it will be the first time in the city's history that it will happen. now, a total of 600 layoff notices went out yesterday as managers called in employees one by one to tell them the bad news. the notices were sent out with the assumption that all 11 workers' unions will take a 10% pay cut. but only four have agreed to do so. this year's $115 million historic deficit is now the tenth year in a row for budget cuts fueled in part by increasing pension costs. this means longer waits for everything from firefighters to applying for city permits. mayor reed said he had little choice but to make the painful cuts. >> i think every department in the city is going to see reduction in people and layoffs most likely. the average citizen will se

good morning. >> reporter: good morning. many of them were handicapped, just one of the challenges firefighters were dealing with last night when the fire broke out at around 9 a.m. they were here all night and there was a spot fire that broke out on the roof a couple of hours ago so firefighters are standing by making sure that this entire building is stable and safe before they leave. they think they will be able to do that at around 8 a.m. so i'm on the corner of taylor and eddy in the tenderloin here in san francisco. last night smoke was pouring from the roof. firefighters believe it started in a trash compactor on the ground floor and traveled up the garbage chute into the attic and through the roof of the building. some people had to be rescued from the fire escape, some hunkered down in their apartments until firefighters got them out. about 100 people live here in the franciscan tower residential hotel. two dozen were injured. most of them with smoke inhalation. they are expected to be okay. and after escaping last
