guest: senator conrad and senator gregg were frustrated with the and pass of dealing with these veryerious problems. they want to look at this and deal with it. they proposed something like an outside, a neutral commission that will go to the budget and come up with recommendations that in the near term would put in balance and long term would provide solvency for entitlement like social security and medicare. that is a pretty big leap to have an outside commission make decisions of that maginitude. when the vote came on the senate floor, that particular bill was not passed. the president promised he would do something as an alternative which was to set up a commission which decomposed of members of the congress and members outside the congress come 18 in all, and it would be our task, are charged to look at the budget in the near term and make recommendations of how to bring the budget in the balance in the near term and long term make recommendations to make social security and medicare solvent for as far as the eye can see. host: long-term goals include stabilizing the debt by 201

[applause] >> well, gregg, you did not ask me, but i would tell the president that if there are anymore stimulus packages, please put the airlines and the aviation industry at the top of the list rather than the bottom. i think we were deeply offended by the way in which we were treated in the stimulus package, but i hope there are not anymore stimulus packages. thank you very much. you were a great panel. greg, great to have you here, and certainly dan and lynn, first time, but i hope not the last. thank you all very much. [applause] well, we have some interesting surprises for you. first of all, this is going to be a long break. it's going to be a 25 minute break, but at 12:10, we really want you back in your seats. now, there is a formula in the way in which you'll eat. some of you will eat, and some of you won't eat. no, i'm just kidding. [laughter] sooner or later you'll all have your lunch. those of you who have a signal on the bottom of your badge that gives you a table number, that means that you get to eat in here. all of the others who have nothing on their badge, we are going

we noticed that there was a problem, and i really want to congratulate senator conrad and senator gregg for getting together a deficit commission bill, and we got a lot of cosponsors on it and we had a vote on it and we didn't have the 60 votes here that were necessary to do it, but i applaud the president for picking that up and appointing a deficit commission, and i think he had two great cochairs. he had alan simpson, former senator, and erskine bowles, who was the chief of staff for president clinton, and they joined with 16 other people to figure out how to get out of this morass, and they came up with a plan, a good plan. now, their 18-member commission had to have 14 members in favor of it before they could actually put it into a forced vote for us, and they didn't get that. they came close. they didn't get that. of course, i -- i would have liked them to have broken that down, promised that they would do all six parts, but break it down into six different parts because different people objected to different parts. there have been plenty to pass each part, and we may have to do t
