i am begins chair of the san francisco pta, the second district of the california pta. that is what i am a going to speak on behalf of. my purpose of coming before you is to make mention of the fabulous art work on the east wall as well as directly behind the board members seated. first bill i want to mention that even though we have only about two hours left is an auspicious day for the san francisco pta. it rests on april 12, 1912, that the san francisco pda was formed, and we hope to continue to support the children and families for another 99 years. the reflections program was started in 1969 and has encouraged many students. you can see on the wall behind main that there was this year's theme. the student artwork is meant to reflect their interpretation. please take this opportunity over the next two eastview this gallery of most special art. we will be sending dvd's to all commissioners as well as to the superintendent's office so you can look at what was received from san francisco students. we are so very proud of all of the participants and hope you are, as well

secondly, talk to administrators, the pta. we've all got to get involved. ot something that's just going to pass by and it escalat escalates. and the worst possibility and the worst scenario is bullying that turns into suicide which is the new term bullycide. >> i used to teach high school. whenever i would call a parent to their child, i got the uniform from everybody, not my child, my child is the best. we've spent all the time talking about children who are bullied. how about those that are bullies? >> first we need to spot it. we need to confront it. we all have a responsibility to ensure that bullies aren't empowered, that we don't feed that kind of anger that then breeds violence or in the case of tragic suicides. calling a spade a spade. saying that it's wrong and having the adults and community members come around to stop it. >> and step in to find out what is that bullying ability? yes, it can be your child because we found out that kids who are bullying later on become bullied themselves. so it's interchangeable. but there is an emotional component

roberto hernandez and the pta board of an elementary school in san rafael's canal district consider themselves among the winners in the battle over target. >> we are struggling to get more jobs. there is a lot of people that are very hard to put footed food on the table right now. have been target here will bring around 164 jobs. >> reporter: he expects local residents to get some of the 260 construction jobs to build the store and half the 250 retail jobs once the store is open. the city of san rafael will get about $3 million from mitigation and construction, about $650,000 in taxes and a last-minute push target offered $25,000 a year for ten years for libraries and other community needs. the residents of the canal area, the new target will be almost within walking distance on this path along the bay and hernandez says at target, the prices are right. >> prices that they have is what we prefer from target. right here, it's hard to get things that are affordable. >> reporter: this supermarket owner says all of san rafael lost with the approval target. >> for instance, they do $55 million out

in the pta president of longfellow elementary school. we are 650 students strong. i will 100 students to school every wednesday, and yet, i cannot get police escorts. i have 100 kids that i walk to school, eight blocks every wednesday to help save the environment, help them keep healthy, and alleviate the problems with our traffic. even though i said e-mails, i cannot get police escorts to help keep our children safe as i walk them to school. they are my responsibility. even though i sent e-mails, i do not get police escort. i would like police escort for those 100 children i walk to school every wednesday to get to school safely. i would appreciate that. and i would appreciate for the san francisco police department -- they have walked with us on our what the school day, so i appreciate that. however, every wednesday, i do want kids to school, and their lives are my responsibility, and i would like the hon. the other thing -- affordable housing sounds very nice and all, but we need jobs. affordable housing cannot be affordable if you do not have a job. we have lot

members have been working with members of the district pta and parents for public schools to develop a tool kit. it will offer resources and tools for parents to help voice their concerns. will also been working with the district staff, a lot of whom i see here that have been very supportive. along with the leadership to make sure that the materials are accurate and in line with district policy and labor agreements. we conducted several focus groups including meeting with the district parent liaisons'. they have their pulse on the community and know what the concerns are as well. to give you a little background on this initiative, a organizations get a lot of calls all the time about how parents can bridge their concerns at the schools. this issue came to the forefront when we realized there were many parents that having many issues and did not know what process to walk through to make sure those concerns were that the district. it is really important to develop a system and work within the district to ensure that the parents know what the chain of command looks like. we also found th

an education coalition is teaming up with the pta to help communities better serve our military kids. the national math and science initiative will bring advanced placement courses to tens of thousands of students including military kids. the sierra club and the ymca are partnering with family associations to give a 15,000 military kids camp. the heart association will help spouses and women veterans lead healthier lives. the list goes on and on. everyone is stepping up. every non-profit can do something. finally, this is about all of us joining forces as americans. we can do it right where we live and work. if you are a parent or teacher, you can encourage or school to find ways to support our military kids. if you're an accountant or counselor, you can offer your services pro bono. the jury member of a church or synagogue, you can their juror fate community to reach out to military families who are grieving. something as simple as mowing the lawn, shoveling the snow for the family down the street. telling mom or dad you'll take the ship on the car pool or bending a had to be wounded

there has been a very robust neighborhood and community process that was sponsored by the bueno vista elementary school pta and sf general. they came up with a thematic design for this mural. here's a closer look at the current condition of the wall and some of the attagging that we get there. the thematic design would look like this. through the student body out reached, they came up with this. this was deemed to be inappropriate topic. they have come up with an artist, mr. victor reyes, who has designed and installed the mural. he has tremendous street cred with the local tagging and skater community in san francisco. san francisco general would be responsible for repairing any damage to parts of the mural for the life of the peace. it will be done withnon-fading pigments. it also has au u-v protectorate. sf general will be responsible for cleaning up or getting rid of any tagging, should it occur on the wall. that's pretty much the summary of the project itself. this is not on rec and park property. under the jurisdiction of the parks commission. we thought it was prudent to at least bring this to you f
