bill karins has the weather channel forecast. >> the understanding of that we were dealing with. it was a month ago i was telling everyone about the alabama, mississippi and georgia tornados. here a month later, we are dealing with one of the worst fatalitywise to go through a metropolitan area. 50,000 people live in joplin this was a look at the radar. notice how it hooks around the storm. we knew it was a devastating tornado when we saw the white pop up there. that is the tornado picking up shingles, trees, whatever was in its way and tossing the lighter objects 10 to 20,000 feet in the air. it is unbelievable what they will be dealing with there. the town was devastated. our thoughts with everyone there in missouri. >> we will check in with you in a bit. first to otherness this morning. the field of republican candidates hoping to take on president obama it became more defined. former minnesota governor tim pawlenty announced his presidential bid one day earlier than expected. >> meanwhile, another republican has taken himself out of the running. individual independe indiana g

i'm fred roggin. >>> for another quick look at the weather, bill karins.. >> when you think of hawaii, you don't think of seeing water spouts. really they're tornadoes over the water. it was a pretty serious situation. about 60,000 people in oahu lost power as the storm rolled through. the water spouts did not move on land. if you have a water spout and it moves over land, that becomes a tornado. that didn't happen from the many reports i heard yesterday. let's bring you back home here. as far as the big corridor goes, i-95, boston, hartford, new york, philly, baltimore down to d.c., every area is going to be warmer than yesterday. that was good. it was kind of cool out yesterday. slight chance of thunderstorms late in the day, more into the evening in d.c., baltimore, and philly. but the daylight hours should be dry. low to mid-80s today. a little shock to the system in philadelphia and d.c. back in pittsburgh and buffalo, much, much cooler. look at buffalo, only 45 degrees with areas of rain. and that ugly weather will head over the top of the big cities

>>> now for a look at your national and regional weather, we check in with nbc meteorologist bill karins with your weather channel forecast. good morning. >> pictures, we're getting more and more images of mississippi. we or moving from one weather story to another. that's how it's been this spring. we went from the horrible tornadoes and now dealing with all the flooding. actually from the same storm systems, all that water too this long to collect. now it's all moving down the ohio and mississippi rivers. we're not raining anymore. it's going to be sunny and dry probably for the next week. that's how long it's going to take for many of these rivers to crest. right now the high water marks are right along the ohio river coming downey the paducah area that will crest sometime tomorrow. then it will take another week for the water to crest in memphis. this water is not moving fast, it's a slow buildup. in the meantime we have record flooding. there's homes the water is halfway up through the live rooms, just incredible. some areas have never seen water this high. the only saving grace is

. >>> let's get a check on the saturday forecast from bill karins. good morning. >> a good saturday to you, alex, we're watching the mississippi river with the flooding, heavy rain in missouri. a loot of people curious about the kentucky derby forecast, the run for the roses. let he had break down the forecast. it's actually a little bit tricky. around the country, the biggest area of rain, we have two of they will, one with showers and thunderstorms rolling through missouri and more rain back up through idaho and montana. it's that area of rain in missouri and illinois, that little weak storm system that will blow through kentucky during the day today. we do expect wet weather at the track. the key is the timing of that rain. you can see it south of st. louis and southern illinois. looks like the heaviest of the rain will miss the louisville area. there will be showers in the forecast. our futurecast, eastern time, of course we're central time in louisville, right around 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., showers will probably be rolling through for the beginning

here's nbc meteorologist bill karins. good morning, bill. how's it look? >> it's quiet still.hh. >> we like to hear it. >> we still have a disaster on the mississippi river. we had so much snow that melted in april in the northern plains, then all the recent heavy rain and tornado outbreaks. and the mississippi river is the problem area. this is the memphis location in major flood stage. they'll go up within a half foot of their record. in the memphis area alone, they're saying about 2,500 properties will be flooded. that's a lot of people with all their items and property ruined. you can see on this map here, these are the big cities on the mississippi river that are going to see major if not historic flding over the next two weeks. we're now watching that crest north of memphis. it's going to crest in memphis next week. and then we're going to watch it cresting to the south of there in greenville about the 17th. it's going to take until about the 20th to get all the way down to southern mississippi. so it's a very slow process. this will be known as one of the great floods o

the forecast from meteorologist bill karins. good morning. >> good saturday morning.t of the great flood of 2011 on the mississippi river. it's only going to get worse in the week ahead. we're watching the ohio river at record flood stage. this map shows you where the crest is, the flashing light. that's where the ohio river meets the mississippi river. there's a ton of water coming from the ohio river. that's where the crest is now. it has to go downstream over the next two weeks. water on the mississippi, it is a slow journey down to the gulf of mexico. cape girardeau, it's the fourth all-time crest. this is really one of the great floods, being compared to the floods of 1927 and 1937. vicksburg, this should be your all-time highest crest on the 20th of this month we still have another week and a half to two weeks to go before we're done with the great flood of 2011. memphis, thankfully, not a lot of rain in the forecast for you. that's good. it's too late, we saw so much heavy rain in april. there are scattered showers and storms rolling through missouri. we'll hav
