tampa was off the radar was tampa was for a very long time a small city. it wasn't a big metropolis like new york or boston. you didn't have the real flashy gangsters that you had up there and really these were small pockets. these were mafia families and organized crime were 20, 30, 40 guys and another reason is because the gambling that was going on at the time was really ingrained into the community. it wasn't really seen as being this terrible vice. so i think a combination of those factors but certainly a guy like santo was certainly known outside the tampa area and i think in terms of name recognition he's probably one of the more recognizable mobsters in the country. some interesting pieces was the mafia itself is a strictly an italian organization. you have to be sicilian to be made into the mafia but there were guys in organized crime that were spanish, that were white, that were cuban. that was very influential and it was an interesting ethnic mixture that you didn't have in any other city. you didn't have that in new york. you didn't have that i

companies, larger corporations not paying their fair share, but having owned and operated small businesses in other cities and other small business owners here, we are proud to be in san francisco, and san francisco gives us an unfair playing advantage because it's better to have a small business here in a lot of ways because there's higher density, there's more people active, there's more people out and about. there's certainly more tourists. and in compared to my business in oakland, i can tell you it's far easier to do business in san francisco when it comes to attracting people. having said that, i'm still on the fence of which one i'm going to vote for. i want to study it a little longer, but i feel small businesses and particularly large businesses have to pay their fair share of taxes and this building and the people in this building and city hall have to be able to spend those taxes wisely. and -- but first and foremost, i'm on this commission to defend and support small businesses in san francisco and have i to analyze this legislation and see how it affects small businesses. i don't want to scar

that's about, i'd say, 300 rooms running along the back side of this canyon, a little village, small city, something. artifacts everywhere. one of the walls had fallen out, revealing the floor that had been packed in there, hundreds of years of people using the same floor just pushing down the dirt so that there are pieces of woven -- of braided string sticking out of the floor everywhere and arrowheads and broken pottery and i realized when i came up against the stack of this trash pile i put my head against it and looked along it. i could see it was covered with hair. people in that room had been combing their hair for hundreds of years and it had been landing on the floor. and then new floors are built on top of that and new floors and i ran my hand across, just barely across, the front of this and i could feel the hair of people who had been there and i was there with a navajo guy that i know who just was creeped out by this. because there's a certain heavy taboo in navaho culture about death and he said after we left this cliff dwelling, he said, i need a ceremony. too much death. yo

larger public companies employ a ton of people here in san francisco that allow small businesses to be created in our city. all of the ancillary small businesses support jobs and all of the ancillary things that come out of employing people in larger companies here in the city, which is why i think it's important, from my perspective, to create a city wide perspective. president o'brien: commissioner o'connor? commissioner o'connor: how are you? i supported the twitter tax break for the reasons which you just stated, which is i wasn't so concerned with twitter, although i think it's great to see the furniture mark building filled with workers who are going to support all of the small businesses and revitalize that area, which has been struggling for a long time. we all know that. however, having said that, the idea that this city could enter into a quasi partnership in supporting and keeping developing companies staying here with the caveat that we would as a city share a potential gain when that company did go public, that's very attractive in lieu of these payroll stock options that are going to be taxe
