this has to do with an already constricted area along the waterfront, including along the embarcadero. while we incurred purging bikes and pedestrians, that we can do so in a safe manner. we are looking at a number of different locations for restricting automobile access, including potentially enclosures on the northbound embarcadero. also, in the northern waterfront areas from keeping too many cars to where they cannot get out of in a quest for an ever-elusive parking spot. that is an engagement challenge, making sure that we set up those restrictions in a way that makes sense for all those who need to use those areas but also enhances the events themselves. with that, this is the last slide, identifying some of our locations online. we continue to take public comment through may. but as i mentioned, it will be and interest process. we will try to get as much, and as we can. with that, happy to answer any questions. >> thank you. is there any public comment on this item? >> thank you for a thorough briefing. in terms, from the city's perspective -- i have a couple observations. and i

to create the embarcadero, they had all of this exposed rock. they decided to mine telegraph hill for the rock and build a levee and bill in behind the levee. they blasted the rock. it was illegal but they did it anyway. they took the rock and built a rock dike all along here. beneath the fill the latem are of this mud with the consistency of jello. that layer may be as thick as 110 feet. >> is bad dyke founded on the mud -- is the dike founded on the mud? >> it is. when they dumped the rock into the bay mud, it was like dumping rock into jello. it went down into the mud so that they could build off of that. it then took the angle of repose. it is stable. san francisco came and built piers on piles over the top into the water. >> the piers are built up over the water. >> refusal is when you cannot advance the pile anymore. this is under the bay mud over there. they meet refusal. they gain support and bearing on top. saltwater attacks concrete. in the old days, they did not understand the effects of salt water, chloride on concrete and steel. a lo

e have thembaradero -- now we have the embarcadero and marina. this map is the infamous lipofaction map. the green areas are the areas that will have potential lip ofaction. that is a loss of strength of material when it is subjected to vibration. it can occur in sand and silt. those have to be saturated or below the ground water level. you can almost type dismount tie t --tie this map -- this area right here is the same as this one. it is all silt and will liquefy. the marina is in this area here. you can correlate the advancement of the shoreline of san francisco with the potential for liquefaction. >> it is a perfect example. it is all sold and liquefaction. >> treasure island is unique. it was originally developed to be the location of the world fair with the understanding that once it was finished, that would become the location of san francisco international airport. it is 11,000 feet long. in those days, the thought that was more than enough to land any conceivable airplane. they thought it was ideal. they said that we have all kinds of san

as you move north, you come to the southern pacific building or the embarcadero centers or the trans america towers. there, the rock is 40, 60 feet deep. but the decision was made that we need parking. so they elected to dig down to the dents supporting soil and build a foundation on the dance material below the bay mud. so that is a rock site, rock expedite -- rock excavation.

the project area extends from pier 1 to pier 14 and on the bay side of the embarcadero and looks at all the improvements in the area. just a little recap. since the freeway came down, there have been a whole series of improvements, so this project builds on the history of what has happened here and the major efforts that the port and city have undertaken. if you look at this orange area, a significant amount of the area has already been improved, but there are other improvements that are still needed. one of the major components of those earlier efforts undertaken by the port was the construction of gate b, e, and the breakwater at pier 14. this was the first phase of very building improvement. it was done to meet the needs of the ferry terminal but also to enhance the qualities of the area so that future redevelopment of the ferry building and public spaces could also be undertaken. quickly, the map showing you the improvements that were made at the time, what it looks like today. these were all completed in [inaudible] currently, we have vallejo and to broaden at agte b. oakland, alam

the embarcadero freeway. it was great. for those of you recall that, there were a few articles. it was a great anniversary. i remember those big machines, eating at the freeway, and here we are. there is a freeway column, so you can get a sense of what the outline of this was. the waterfront was a great project. it has really been -- i say a generational project. this event has the opportunity to advance the idea of creating the greatest waterfront in the world, a people's waterfront, and i think we have made tremendous progress, but if this could be able to get a bunch of products that have been in people's minds or been on the books for a while, get those going. it is that permanent legacy piece i think that we want to see. any event is a terrific amount of work and a terrific amount of energy goes into it. we want this to be great for all the attendees, but we also what folks to walk around. barcelona is a great example. as an olympic city, they were able to create a permanent legacy said that decades after the event, they are still enjoying that for structure. we have got thi

there is a new picture this morning, this one surfaced on facebook, it shows her getting out of the embarcadero bart station on monday morning. this is exactly what her friends and family that she had planned and then they believe she headed to the golden gate bridge. today four different public agencies have been searching for allison bayliss along the waterfront on foot, all of them watching the shoreline and watching the golden gate bridge looking for any signs of 15-year-old girl. she was last seen monday morning at her high school. she had been feeling upset and isolated. her bike was found near the golden gate bridge yesterday morning. even though sources say she left a status on her facebook page indicating she may take her own life. >> we are hopeful we will find her. we generally will search very thoroughly to find a missing person. >> a couple of volunteers from danville showed up trying to figure out how to help, even in the rain. they say they feel like they have to do something. >> we care about family, and they are neighbors and part of our community. >> there is a huge volunteer

this is the embarcadero, san francisco, brown to belmont feeling sprinks -- san francisco, down to belmont feeling sprinkles. san francisco has been reporting a little bit of rain in the last half-hour or so. this rain is just on its way in. let me show you what we can expect through the afternoon. at 3:00 or so, already beginning to slide in. the 5:00 drive home gonna be slippery and a slow go, this rain will continue on as we move through the evening hours. we wake up and we're still with a few scattered showers. in fact, that wednesday morning, we're still trying to dry out. it's not until wednesday afternoon that we finally break away into partly cloudy skies and the dry weather begins. between now and then, we're talking 48 hours or so, we'll be unsettled. 21 miles per hour in oakland, 17 san francisco, 10 to 15, santa rosa, san rafael, so for today we're going to be very windy in the afternoon/evening hours. even gusting to 40 miles an hour across the coastline. we could see .25 to .50 of rain. and most possible for the mountains. 50s and 60s in the forecast for this afternoon. sligh

it will allow for efficient drop-off and pick-up areas that beget a vehicular traffic off of the embarcadero. in 2009 the board asked dtw to help with the project and a team was hired, architects working in association with cruise terminal design consultants. working to decide appear to be designed appeared 27 cruise terminal and public plaza. there are also provisions to allow it to be used in meeting in special event usage. the design team has recently completed schematic design and development is currently under way. next slide? december 31 of last year, the city may bid to host the america's cup and it was accepted by the event authority, including the use appears 27 and 29. this use provides funding and support from the event the authority for the overall project costs and provides a viewing experience for the event occurring in 2013. as a result of this additional usage, the cruise terminal project is aligned two-stage improvements in a compressed project delivery schedule. under the host agreement, the authority is required to demolish the entire shed at pier 27 and the non-historic p
