recovery, and it's a very hopeful, fun time for people. we started actually 8 years ago holding a recovery event in rhode island. it's a way which we give a voice to people in recovery. it's a way for us to tell people there is hope, that treatment does work. there's entertainment and speakers, the bands are playing, and clients are having a really great time. and we're meeting with politicians and other mental health providers. these types of events are important to highlight. it's important because we are educating the public about both mental health issues and substance abuse issues. we're also, by holding these types of events, we're also working to reduce the stigma associated with mental health or drug-substance abuse issues. this year, we're tying it into waterfire. we're taking the light of remembrance from here out into the general public, out into waterfire, the 20,000 people that are there to basically say, each of us is important, each of us has a voice, and this issue is important. it raises a level of awareness to have an event such as this associated with waterfire, which has a great reputation. we took it out of an indoor facili

faces and voices for recovery provides an individual an opportunity to join others and to figure out ways to support each other and to sustain recovery. and we haven't gotten to the fact that once we do get a person to go into recovery, that there is also a need for either a mutual support group or some other type of activities. within the context of ethnic and racial and other special populations, what is important to keep in mind in terms of a person that is in recovery in order for them to sustain their recovery? well, in order to sustain recovery, as we all know, a mutual support network is vital. and from a tribal standpoint, it's community support. because unfortunately, with faces and voices, what we are striving to do is continue to battle the stigma of discrimination that people with an addiction continue to face. well, in indian country, it's almost twofold. you have still the struggling addict that is criminalized and when they get into recovery, if they have a mutual support network and the community embraces them and continues to nurture them on their recovering journey,

the training that was developed by faces and voices of recovery in conjunction with funding from samhsa. people in the recovery community have been looking for a long time for language that they can use to really describe what it is that they've been through and what it is that they're trying to advocate for. so faces and voices of recovery has used the training as an opportunity create a video, a dvd, that can be you know sent around the country, can be put on the internet, can really be used in trainings and in workshops around the country so that more people have the terminology that's necessary to communicate our, our message to the broadest possible audience. there are three major sections of the dvd. the first is a 90- minute training video which takes you through faces and voices of recovery's media and message training, the actual core training itself. the second part of the dvd is a section called, "keys to successful interviews". that section really is helpful for people who are going to be going into an interview situation and they need to brush up on some basic skills. and the third section of the dvd contains all the materials,
