guest: they did and bob woodward today is an associate at "the washington post." carl bernstein is that "vanity fair." there was a time when journalism was very adversarial to the white house. i would have to say that not too long after watergate, by the time i was in the white house, i was surprised at how tame it was. you are on the white house press corps and you are covering the president. if the president and his step don't give you access, you are dead. you will not function well as a journalist and restores will not be printed and will pull you off the beach. host: carl bernstein and bob woodward were not technically white house reporters. guest: that's right and that may have been part of the reason why they got the green light and went further. if i am a reporter assigned to the white house, access is everything. "the washington post" had a reporter who was a great writer. he would read his opening paragraph and they were classic eloquent. he was soon pulled off the beach because he broke the story of where the next gorbachev-bush summit would take place.
