about 75% of americans know somebody who's gay or lesbian, bisexual or transgender. however, knowing them, very impactful, but isn't as impactful if the folks who are gay don't actually talk about it. and so being out... being out, and in particular being out and talking about the ways in which you're less equal. about 70% of america thinks it's illegal to fire somebody in the workplace because they're gay, but it's only illegal in 21 states. 29 states you can get fired. if america would understand that... >> hinojosa: so let's just be clear, just so we can make it clear. so that means that, for example, i'm your boss, and in 29 states, i suddenly say, "you know what? i don't like the fact that jarrett made a nice compliment to a fellow coworker who's a man. therefore i can fire jarrett"? >> well, that can be sexual harassment, so let's be clear about that. >> hinojosa: okay. but i don't like the fact that... >> you don't like the fact that i've got a picture of a guy on my desk who happens to be the person i'm in a committed lifetime relationship with, you can say,

lesbian and bisexual the mills are three times more likely to be victims of violence. supervisor cohen: i wonder if there was a correlation as to why the numbers are higher for the young boys. >> the gay and -- supervisor cohen: yes. >> there are many factors. the stress that students have from not being out. within their own relationships, some time that can cause the violence to happen, as well as not having a lot of role models for healthy relationships. again, the stress that occurs with not being able to be out at school or with their families. the next slide is the percentage of students that have been forced to have sex in their lifetime. that is around 6%. we asked this question just at the high-school level. the last slide we are sharing is exposure to community violence. in the past 12 months, how often was their violence in your neighborhood? fights, shootings, muggings. we have broken down by race and ethnicity. a couple of the way that we begin to address both teen dating violence and children witnesses of domestic violence is through training. we have a s

. >> in 2004, when the city opened up marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples we were here. and then got in and got married. we were so appreciative for the city to do this and make it available. it was for chaos. >> in 2004, we had no idea what to expect. we had originally wanted to marry under the 9:00 a.m. court opening. meaning we were trying to do it in a way where we could get the first marriage under the bell before the courts came in to stop us. what we didn't know was what we didn't know. it's going about things and not knowing the consequences. we had to quickly organize a way to get through the enormity of requests to get married >> later that year, the california supreme court ruled they were void. >> the law in this case worked. we challenged the law and went up the ranks and eventually the supreme court said stop and we stop. there was a great sense of despair in some sense, but hopefulness that we would live to fight another day and in spite of those licenses be voided and the fact there was disappointment and we had to stop and everything we had done had been

forces, 70%, said that serving with gays or lesbians would have no negative effect on them. but there was a very different response from forces fighting in iraq and afghanistan. 58% of combat marines said they would prefer not to serve with gays. another group that has voiced concerns about the repeal are chaplains. of the 3,000 active-duty chaplains, a majority are conservative christians. brigadier general douglas lee has served over 31 years as both a reserve and active duty chaplain and now heads the joint commission that represents presbyterian reformed chaplains. he is one of 66 retired chaplains who wrote a letter to president obama and secretary of defense gates urging them not to repeal don't ask don't tell. >> homosexuality is one of a multitude of sins. chaplains essentially help people wrestle with the sins that beset them in their lives and try and give them encourage and hope and a way out of all that, and for the christian the way out is jesus christ. for another religion it might be some other means. the problem with this repeal is that this particular sin is
