please welcome moderator owen youngman and author martin marty. [applause] >> thank you very much. and welcome to the printers row lit fest. we're delighted to have this opportunity to talk with you about a particularly interesting idea, the idea of the biography not of a person, but of a book. and helping us to parse through that idea is the recent author of just such a biography, dr. martin marty, who is professor emeritus of history at the university -- of religious history at the university of chicago, as many of you already well know. and he has written a biography of dietrich bonhoeffer's letters and papers from prison. it's one of three books that's kicking off a series of such books from princeton university press. and to start our discussion, i want to read the press' description of what they're trying to do and then ask dr. marty to comment on it. they say that this new series recounting the complex and fascinating histories of important religious texts written for general readers by leading authors and experts is intended to trace how their reception, interpretation and

house, the former head of the democratic congressman campaign committee, former congressman martin frost. marty, this is as luke and maggie were pointing out a very tough behind the scenes drama because he doesn't have very many friends right now. in fact, i can't think of a prominent democrat in new york or otherwise speaking out for him including his former boss, chuck shuk chumer. >> if i was still there i would do what steve israel and nancy pelosi have done, an immediate ethics investigation. now, what will happen, you don't -- a member never gets expelled for something like this. the only reason you have congress ever expels anyone is if you committed a felony or pled guilty to a felony. that's not the case here. the ethics could very well seriously reprimand him. if they're going to do that, they need to do it quickly so the party can get it behind him. i imagine there will be other conversations going on. >> martin, the speaker of the house took action within 24 hours against two members, two republican members. doesn't that create a new standard, a new threshold? it makes nancy pelosi

martin savage outside the courtroom joins us now. marty, do we know if she'll testify tomorrow? >> no, we don't know tonight. this is the way it is going down. it's been three years now this case has been under investigation. 31 days that trial has been going on. as you point out it could all come to an end tomorrow for the defense. that's what they have said. however, that doesn't mean the end of the trial. because the prosecution says they want time for rebuttal. that could take them two days. on top of that, both sides have said for closing arguments they need a half day each. and then you have the judge that has to essentially charge the jury, give them the dos and don'ts before he sends them off. this could take anywhere from 45 minutes to maybe three hours. and here's the real question mark here. before they start deliberations, this is a holiday weekend that's coming up. do they really want to hear closing arguments on a sunday and really get into deliberation on the fourth of july? the judge says he'll leave it up to the jury. anderson? >> marty, we'll check in with you
