new york now joins five other states in allowing same-sex marriage. iowaew hampshire. massachusetts, connecticut and the district of columbia. so six states and the district of columbia allow same-sex marriage. if you look at the map as well, seven additional states allow either civil unions or domestic partnerships. new jersey, illinois, hawaii, california, nevada, washington and oregon out on the west coast. how do people feel nationally? gallup has a recent poll that shows 53% of americans say, yes, same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. 45% of americans say no. if you look, gallup breaks it down by party affiliation. 69% of democrats say yes. that's up a bit from last year. 59% of independents say yes, same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. but look at the number among republicans. fewer than 3 in 10 republicans say yes. same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. 28% of republicans say yes. this year, exactly the same number a year ago. so will there be a national impact from new york's same law allowing same-sex marriage. christine quinn

[laughter] yesterday... yesterday cain wowed an iowa crowd by calling obama care a drain on our nation's resources and on our printer to toner. jim? >> don't try to pass a 2,700-page bill. and even they didn't read it. that's why i'm going to only allow small bills. three pages. >> stephen: yeah, three pages. why did overhauling a $2.5 trillion industry and ensuring that every american has access to affordable health care have to be so complicated? it's not rocket science. oh, and incidentally, rocket scientists, your proposal for the mars mission, keep it short. iowa is leading off in february, then new hampshire. correspondent shannon bream says iowa may not be first for some candidates. >> to potential 2012 g.o.p. contender former utah governor and ambassador john huntsman says he will skip the first electoral event of the presidential race. iowa february caucus. "i'm not competing in iowa for a reason. i don't believe in subsidies that prop up corn, soy beans. i probably won't be spending a lot of time in iowa. i understand how the politics work there." but experts say iowa is not a one-issue state. >> he could have talked about jobs and the economy. i think to talk about ethanol as a reason he can't compete in iowa, it doesn't wash. >> huntsman says he will focus on florida, new hampshire, and south carolina. iowa secretary of state matt schultz released a statement asking is john huntsman not coming to iowa because he is afraid to explain positions on other issues? iowa congressman steve king opposes ethanol subsidiaries and he continues to get re-elected with large margin of victory. >> th

but the problem is in new hampshire and iowa, that's retail politics 101 at its best.you got to be out there touching the flesh and talking to people. and to a certain extent, if he's not very good at it they've got to take him out of those situations as much as possible. clearly here's a guy, he's just not very good at it. got to limit those situations. but it's hard in iowa and new hampshire. >> i want to ask both of you just in general about the gop field right now. tony, as you watch the field right now, what interests you the most? what do you think is -- what are you going to be watching for asides anyone new entering the race? what are you going to be watching for with the current candidates in the next couple of weeks? >> i think the question is increasingly who is going to be the alternative to romney. i mean, romney's not quite a frontrunner but he's almost. he's around 25,30% in a split field. so the question is, who is going to emerge as the alternative down the stretch? we're a long way from the stretch. but june is remarkably close to september, which is

knows, and that is in order to be nominated in a contested year, you have to win, ideally, both iowa and newpshire, but at least one of the two. the voters of iowa and new hampshire, call them what they are-- i happen to have great respect for them-- but they want to see candidates. they want to take the measure of candidates personally. they want to-- a sense of their personality, to hear their answers, to hear their questions answered, to be asked for their vote. and newt gingrich treated this like he was promoting a book or on a movie tour. he was going to do talk shows. he would come in and do talk shows and maybe do an op-ed page piece. and david's absolutely right. i mean, he just had no idea what a campaign-- he couldn't run a two-car funeral. >> brown: do you think he's still a viable candidate, if he ever was? >> he is dead man walking right now. >> brown: dead man walking. >> right. he will be at the debate on monday in new hampshire and he'll probably say something provocative, but there louis less and less attention paid to him. >> somehow, we have to police the people who are no
