the emperor penguin landed on the coast of new zealand.,000 miles from its own in antarctica. the lost and hungry bird ate more than 6 1/2 pounds of wet sand, thinking it was snow. one-tenth of the penguin's body weight. >> normally when he gets on the beach in antarctica, he would begin eating snow. it appears in this case, he didn't know the difference. and was eating sand. that's what made him sick. >> reporter: so, a doctor at a local hospital did what he would do for any of his human patients. he inserted a camera, all the way down the penguin's gullet. while in recovery, the penguin is being housed in a chilled room at about 46 degrees fahrenheit and does has a bed of ice on which to sheep. they expect him to make a full recovery in two to three months. again, though, guys, there is concern about getting him back to his colony in antarctica. the believe that perhaps he picked up some bacteria on his wayward swim that would decimate the colony. >> still no decision? >> no decision. and they have three months to decide. >> and they're
