bill: what? lay it on me. >> reporter: let me give you both size of the chrysler -- sides of the chrysler story. here's the argument. chrysler was an american icon, basically given to an italian company using taxpayer money as a bridge loan, taxpayers lost over a billion dollars as an example of what government should not do. here's the other side of the coin. taxpayer money saved jobs, kept factories open and opened the way to more fuel efficient cars built in and by americans in the future. it was an example of what government can do, the bailout was a success. two sides to the coin, depends on who you ask on the chrysler story. but again, i want to give you the hard numbers because there's no disputing them. chrysler got $12.5 billion in early 2009. they repaid 11.2 billion leaving the taxpayer with a $1.3 billion loss. i report, you decide, bill. i'm bill o'reilly. thanks for watching us tonight. why a debt deal can't get done. that is the subject of this evening's talking points memos. first of all, we taped this program earlier today because right now at this very moment i'm on a plane to california. if anything happens this hour shepard smith will magically appear before your eyes. do not be horrified. if anything happens, our hard news people will be on the case. now, the reason the debt deal can't get done is because of pressure on both president obama and speaker of the house john boehner. last thursday, we went over the tea party objections to any debt compromise and some of you were angry with that analysis. as dhak reiterated charles krauthammer reiterated last night the tea party is a problem when compromise becomes necessary. president obama has the same kind of problem from the far left. the insidious move on organization is actually threatening any democrat who doesn't toe the far left line that is raise taxes. president obama is al

this bill prevents a default and it pays our bills. congress must act swiftly to deter ratings downgrade of our u.s. goverent. a downgrade that will affect families and small businesses all across the country. only a sound, credible plan that places on that sustainable trajectory will threaten that downgrade, driven in part by an unprecedented spending binge by this administration which has blown up the fiscal balance sheet. you know, a previous speaker said a few moments ago that we're playing games. i can assure you, this is no game. this is serious stuff. and speaking of serious, the white house is still refusing to offer a serious specific plan in writing that we can review. in fact, in a stinging review of the administration, the director of the c.b.o. said, we don't estimate speeches. you know, the senate's dug in itheels too. it would be nice if they passed the bill. any bill. it's been 800 days since there's been a budget. it's time for them to act. and to move. to prevent this type of a fiscal calamity that many have predicted

did that happen on the two bill bills the house sent over? >> bret they basically tabled those and killed those right away. republican senator mcconnell's office sending out a quote from senator reid back a few years saying in the senate it has always been the case you need 60 votes. simple majority vote would be needed to pass the reid vote. the congressional budget office has some out with a new assessment of that bill. it suggests that he is using the january baseline numbers and this is kind of, you know, in the specifics here. >> sean: washington speak. >> bret: washington speak but means $200 billion less of savings that they said was in the reid bill from the beginning and, of course, there is the controversy over the $1 trillion they say are in savings from pulling back from surge levels in afghanistan and iraq. a lot of concerns about the reid bill that they could never get 60 votes. what really will happen is a negotiation, a compromise that we will likely see tomorrow and it will be put on the shell of the boehner bill that still i

bill: understood.s been taken out of the equation, so you've got the leaders in the house and the senate, they're the ones who are doing the negotiations without a rep from the white house in the room we are told as of this past weekend. so you're saying we will get a deal in seven days or before that? >> i'm saying we should. the only reason we shouldn't is because you have an intransigent bunch in the house. in fact, republicans are feuding amongst themselves in the house. speaker boehner can't even guarantee that he can get republican yet to vote for his proposal which is a my way or the highway proposal which won't go anywhere in the senate, so it's difficult to believe that the republicans have a plan out of this other than to let the government go overboard. bill: you know, they're meeting right now. we're going to find out in a matter of minutes what they talked about. >> keep your fingers crossed. under this bill the e.p.a. would hardly be allowed to do anything about dangerous pollution that threatens our public health. the legislation blocks the new vehicle standards that will save consumers at the gas pump and would reduce the amount of oil that we import as a nation. and if that wasn't bad enough, the bill decides to prohibit the state of california from setting its own clean vehicle standards. the legislation also includes an extinction writer, one of the most aggressive threats to the endangered species act in my career here that would freeze all of the efforts to protect the imperiled species across the country. and one of the most offensive aspects of this bill is out of a very long list is the 80% cut in the land and water conservation fund. for nearly 50 years the land and water conservation fund has taken oil and gas drilling fuel and a finite resource to invest them in the continuing protection of our resources on land, not taxpayer dollars, these are takesen from the oil companies -- taken f
