i thought, should i send this? i'm being presumptuous saying you have to write this book to get to the next which will be better. i thought, we are writers, we know how it is i can send this. so what if she doesn't talk to me for a year she will get over it. i sent it. within an hour an e mail came back and all it was was, you are right. she finished the next one. the bulk of the first draft in 6 months. so, you know, i mean, who knows. so i felt this way to a large extent. it was not easy it was hard in a lot of ways because of the culture and the story and because of getting it right but i thought it helped me as a writer. so i will sip not gin and read a section and i will throw it open and see if you can ask me something that you might be interested in instead of hearing me speak. whoa has read this book? do i need to explain? no. i do know that when i read "presumed innocent" on an airplane in 1988, i decided that if i ever get around to writing the novel that i probably will never write, it will be a courtroom novel. and scott didn't invent the genre. neither did john grisham. earl stanley gardner was writing courtroom drama in the 1930's and 1940's. "anatty of a murder" came out in 1958. first we have "to kill a mockingbird," which most lawyers and most lawyer authors will tell you is kind of the seminal work of why we got interested. and i started writing a novel as i was approaching my 40th birthday. i wrote most of it on a ferry going to and from work every day. it took me three years. and that book became "special circumstances," story of a murder in a big law firm. it came out in 2000 and spent seven weeks on "the new york times"' bestsellers' list. so for those of you who have bought my books, i thank you, because now i don't have to practice law full-time anymore. >> but all kidding aside, you know, i think crime novelists and readers of crime novels whether it's lawyer books or whether it's private detect

i was honestly one of the best friends of mine right i thought i was going to pass out i was so happy. there was my wife and my daughter that had seemed ready here and it was just almost too good to be true it was wonderful. of the same time though it was only so wonderful because i'd spent the last year away from them in iraq which was terrible and so when the t.v. camera man came up to me and asked me some questions i told him out of the bat i said i'm really glad to be home i'm proud of my service but i am against the war in iraq and i know that some family members and some friends weren't pleased that i said that i thought it was maybe inappropriate at the time but if every soldier comes home and they just say that they're glad to be home the knowns going to know the truth about what's going on in iraq. just. puts a. slight list of things a spin it may be disappointing sabse net states will be seen in places where it looks good and so for people on the field one hundred plus to the to the city seems to me as you know maybe a push. in the salt lake. city. police is. at least someth
