the new and final harry potter film opens today with some screenings that actually started at midnight. tara moriarty joins us live from oakland's jack london square where a screening is underway. >> reporter: less than 20 minutes ago harry potter started pouring into the theater here. they are very anxious to see the film. it already smashed the box office record for advance ticket sales. >>> it is a scene from sold out screenings across the country, harry potter and the deathly hallows part two has already reached the $45 million dollar mark in sales. in the last hour movie-goers young and old scrambled to by a seat. the first published was published in 1997 and, of course spawned a worldwide phenomenon. >> i going to see it right now. >> it is just that it is the last last movie and i have grown up with it literally like i am the same age as the actors, i am turning 21 and it started when i am 11. >> i love it, when before i had kids i was coming without them. it is magical, it is fun, it is a chance to be a kid again. >> reporter: fans in full wizard gear flocked in. hollywood is wondering if the weekend box office will top that

jack johnson has already pleaded guilty to extortion and evidence tampering. he'll be sentenced in september. >>> today is the deadline set by a judge for a d.c. council member. harry thomas jr. has to respond to an allegation he did not pay more than $15,000 in student loans and interest. a lawyer representing the government says thomas acquired the debt by taking out two federally guaranteed student loans in 1983 and 1984. this isn't the only lawsuit thomas is facing. he's also accused of spending more than $300,000 in city money on lavish trips and an suv. >>> the fairfax county animal shelter has euthanized all the cats in its facility. 80 animals had to be put down after a highly contagious virus was brought to the shelter in june. veterinarians thought they had the virus contained, but when it started to spread, they had no choice but to put down all the cats and clean the entire facility. >> the staff is pretty devastated by this. they come to work every day hoping that their work and their care and attention improves the life of an animal. to have to put these animals down. and some of them were not showing symptoms at the time, but the protocol says it doe

that's why you mention, harry reid and barbara mikulski, and many senate democrats in particular are very upset about this. they had an unhappy, tense meeting with jack lu yesterday afternoon. lu is the white house budget editor. he didn't do much to reassure the democrats that they weren't being led down the path of huge spending cuts and very little in revenue. host: they are careful to say nothing has been agreed to at this point, but if they do announce a deal between the president and the speaker, is there any guarantee congress and the two bodies will find the votes for it? guest: that's a good question. the answer is, absolutely not. there is no guarantee that if boehner and the president walk up to a microphone together and announce that a deal has been reached either today or over the weekend, that that will guarantee passage of the house and the senate. you have to look at the challenges that the leadership faces in getting any deal through. it's most problem matic probably -- problematic probably in the house. we can't county on a lot of the republicans. as we discussed, democrats are weary of this deal and feel the president may be abando

harry reid and minority leader mitch mcconnell. and so was my next guest, minority whip jonathan kyl, thanks for joining us you heard jack lew saying absolutely a deal will be done and this country will not default. are you there as well with that? >> the country will not default. whether or not there are savings retrieved in the process is the question. >> what kind of deal do you think is done. we heard resurrection of the ground bargain. do you think that's possible? >> unless the president gets off his absolute obsession with raising taxes, republicans are not going to agree to do anything that will harm our economy. and job killing taxes will harm our economy. there will not be a default. as to whether or not we can achieve savings in the process, again, depends on the president. >> let me quickly ask you, how willllhere not be a default? what do you believe will be the outcome? >> republican leaders have made it clear, if all else fail, if our efforts to adopt legislation to cut the deficit, put a straight jacket on it, balance the budget, so-called cut, cap and balance, i think that passes the house. if that doesn't pass the

year-old little guy jack, and when he is my age and the trajectory of the country, it is going to cost 42 cents on every dollar made in america just to run the federal government. now, taking harry reid's advice of tax and corporate jets and whatever else he threw in there, that is going to do nothing to resolve the trillions upon trillions of dollars that is becoming an avalanche upon not just on our kids' heads, but ours, you and i and the people listenbing. we are moving to the economic condition of greece, and these folks are talking about corporate jets. what they need to be talking about is cutting spending -- >> but is there a way to move to the middle and cut spending, but other fat as well, and other pork to figure out a common middle ground to not talk about this up until august 2nd. it is basically like you bring up with your child when they get the homework it is due and due at a certain time, and we keep pushing the can down the road and why can't we get an consensus out of washington, d.c.? >> well, for one thing the democrats and it should have passed a budget. i don't know what the day count is anymore, but i think it is 750 days, and even when the democrats had

harry reid's might not pass. they need to have a full open debate in the senate about the budget and about the future of our country. >> you heard what jack lue was saying. it was essentially, you can't have everything you want. tax increases, congressman, are now off the table. what is it you need to raise the debt ceiling? >> it's what america needs. none of these plans actually ever balance the budget. they don't plant on doing that. >> in six days we won't balance the budget. >> no, we are not. in six days or longer, the reports came out today. it is really not six days. it might be longer. we don't know. we asked the treasury department to provide numbers. >> jack lue said august 2. >> the treasury department has the number. i don't want to argue about that. the point being we need a long-term solution. it is not about just raising the debt ceiling. it is a long term solution. and when we're borrowing 42 cents out of every dollar we spend, it is a major, major problem. i'm glad washington is looking at the problem. a spending problem and hopefully we'll pass something. >> here's the question. you have six days left. you know how wash
