indicated columnist krauthammer -- syndicated columnist charles krauthammer.s on today, a.b.? >> i thought the president gave what is well be considered a cynical press conference. he, if you haven't been paying close attention to this all along, would convince you that he has found 11th hour enlightenment to cuts on mandtory spending and programs like medicare, medicaid and social security. he is not giving details but what he is saying is that the republicans are unbudgeable, they want it my way or the highway. and after the last 72 hours of the republican scrambling on this issue, they have finally made up a plan to vote on this cut cap and balance idea on next weekend. i think it's good. i think during the standoff in april when the government was at risk of being shut down on this year's budget, the house republicans really show the american public they were governing. they threw bill after bill after bill on the house floor and it looked like they were the ones with the plan, trying to keep government open. they need to talk about how they are trying to

>> well, it is now -- i mean, what krauthammer wrote i think contains some truth in it, as of thursday and friday. and i agree with morris. our problem is we have two fundamental disagreements here, alex. the republican party and the conservatives believe the country has been going in the wrong direction. too much spending, and they're going to stop it and give it no more revenue, and the democratic party basically likes where the country has been going, so we've had a conflict. but when you came to middle of the middle last week, that was the time at which i think the tea party has to say, look, we've got no new taxes in the deal, whatever it is, we're going to get some spending cuts, let's take our pot off the table. we've won the hand. give mr. boehner the ability to negotiate with harry reid on the final deal, which is not going to be as much to our liking as boehner's deal and do that. that's when they put their feet in and dug in and i think they made a mistake then and they hurt boehner. but the fundamental problem here is a fundamental disagreement in which the two parties thin

this is what you have been talking about ad nauseam at this panel, the plan -- we called it the krauthammer, this has been out there, it's so obvious, it allows the republicans to get an immediate cut in spending. you match it with six-month extension. so it's a two-stage process. you use the six months to have serious negotiations over the two ways to really reduce the debt, entitlement reform and tax reform. it is a very honest -- you can argue it on the merits. these are complicated issues. tax reform, everybody agrees on in principle, but it requires closing of loopholes, how do you deal with the mortgage interest rate deduction. >> it takes time. >> right. it gives you six months to have a serious negotiation. it's not even that ideological. it's a way of balancing the loopholes and the reduction in rates. so with that six months, you can have structural reform. what the ratings agencies want is a demonstration in some kind of structural reform and entitlements, the drivers of the debilityof thedebt, that americs about cuts. all of the other is smoke and mirrors. the president needing
