let's head to melissa francis at the news desk. good morning. >> good morning, lester and jenna. good morning, everyone. we begin in japan where a 7.3 magnitude earthquake rocked the coast today. it did prompt a brief tsunami warning and evacuation. this was the same area hit by a massive quake in march but no sign of further damage along the coast. >>> a new york state amusement park roller coaster remains closed and the focus of an investigation after a double amputee iraq war veteran was thrown off the ride and died. nbc kevin tibbles reports. >> reporter: he was a decorated hero from the war in iraq. but when 29-year-old sergeant james hackamer came home in 2008, he lost both of his legs in a roadside bomb attack. >> just to get this chance to come home is a miracle. >> reporter: he was rebuilding his life as a son, husband and father of two. following years of rehabilitation he went friday to the darien lake amusement park, he wanted to try the ride of steal and climbed into the front seat. after coming off one of the steep, sharp hills he was apparently thrown from the ride

and melissa francis will join me to talk about the implications in 15 minutes. >>> breaking news now out of ooslo, norway. at least one explosion has rocked the country's government headquarters. we're told two people are now confirmed dead and several others are injured. according to one government official we may actually see people trapped here in the building. this blast so big it shattered nearly all the windows at a high rise there in oslo. nbc's martin fletcher is following the developments from london. what do you have, martin? >> the bomb seems to targeted oslo's main government building. 17 stories high. yet almost all the windows blown out. the office of norway's prime minister was damaged. he wasn't in his office and he wasn't hurt. although there are reports that at least eight people injured. two deaths reported so far. there's also reports that some people may be trapped inside the building. it's in the city center, an area of office buildings, caves, shops. damage spread over half a mile. there was panic when the bomb exploded. people knock over chairs in caves runnin

for a look at how the markets are reacting to those numbers let's bring in cnbc's melissa francis. >> i'm looking at the nasdaq bun 1%, the s&p down 1.. the dow the down triple digits. all the sectors getting hammered. everything is lower including oil. that's the one bright spot. it's getting hit because traders are anticipating slower growth in the economy, we're seeing crude oil down more than $2 on the day. i had the ceo of wd-40 on a little while ago. he asked him if he's hiring. he said, yes. he said big businesses are getting blamed for not hiring, what's holding it back. he said first of all, he is hiring. what's stopping him from spending more is the uncertainty out there. all the fear and consumers aren't buying a lot of products. it's this vicious cycle where consumers have to buy to get companies to spend, but they can't until they get a job sort of bleak out there. >> the private sector really when you take a look at the most recent job reports have stayed pretty consistent. they haven't blipped up or down. >> that's really the case. we're bumping along the bottom here. t

melissa francis is here with that.blican politicians like michele bachmann, steve israel, joe walsh, who argue the u.s. wouldn't default on its loan so what's the real impact here? >> you know, s & p and moody's are saying not so fast, we won't let you escape on a technicality. they are basically saying you may pay your debt, you may pay bond holders but if you get out there and don't make payments like social security or anything else that we may not pay instead of paying bond holders, they will downgrade the debt anyway. it basically means it would be harder for the u.s. to borrow money in the future and also those who lent money to the u.s. would have to hold more capital on their books in order to make up for the fact the u.s. might default. it's bad. bottom line is not good news. >> okay. if we just default for say a couple days and then there's a deal to be done to raise the debt ceiling, does it still have the same impact? >> you know, basically, s & p and moody's are saying yes. yes. they're saying none of thes

we dropped another ten points since we started talking to melissa francis. it looks like this is starting to have an impact on wall street. the trickle down effect to main street where you're going to see students questioning how much their college loan payments might go up if you see interest rates rise. a georgia mom who was convicted in the jaywalking death of her young son won't go to prison for now. last week a jury convicted raquel nelson of reckless conduct, improperly crossing a roadway and second degree vehicular homicide. a hit and run driver was the one who killed nelson's 4-year-old son, a.j. that driver spent six months behind bars. raquel nelson faced up to three years in jail. in sentencing yesterday the judge gave her a choice, a new trial or 12 months probation. raquel nelson joins me again. now along with her aunt. we talked about this a couple days ago the threat of you going to jail for longer than the driver who actually hit and killed your son. so raquel, it had to be a relief to be given this choice. >> yes, it definitely was. like a c

cn cnbc's melissa francis is watching the markets. good morning. apparently the markets do not like cliffhangers. >> no, absolutely not. traders are saying this morning it's time to consider the unthinkable, and that's that a deal in washington may not coming to. we saw the dow drop right out of the gate this morning. all through this crisis i've been talking to investors and ceos across the country and they've said they're not worried about it, a deal will come together at the last minute. when i skds, what's your contingency plan, most have said, i don't have one. now we're down to crunch time and the market is getting nervous. where we aren't seeing it is the bond market, where the government borrows money, where treasuries are sold. so far that money has continued to flow and the yields have stayed low. where we are seeing it is gold. gold this morning popping to a new record $1,637 an ounce. the market's looking very nervous this morning and waiting to hear exactly what's going to happen but more nervous than we've seen them before. another hu

cnbc's missa francis is at the new york stock exchange for us. good morning, melissa. >> good morning, natalie. wall street is very much focused on debt talks, which as you heard are pretty much stalled right now. moody's has a suggestion to help the problems. that's the rating agency that may downgrade u.s. debt. they are saying why not do away with the debt ceiling all together? they put that in a report and said that a lot of countries don't even have a debt ceiling, so that would really eliminate the fight right here. no word if the government is taking that suggestion or not. we're also watching news corp. stocks under pressure under this hacking scandal. investigators are trying to parse the fact only 25% of the company's revenue actually comes from newspapers. the rest is from television and satellite operations and they're trying to figure out where is the value there, and how much overlap will we see? and finally, it's a big earnings week down here on wall street. ibm reporting after the bell, so you want to listen for that one, natalie. back to you. >> we wi
