. >> reporter: steve stahl says he is lucky to be cooking in his own home. >> i feel a burden taken off that i'm not going to be homeless. and i'm so grateful for that. >> reporter: with medical bills and losing his job, steve was also about to lose his home until folks from the emergency mortgage assistance program gave him hope. >> this is a program that is designed to help homeowners maintain homeownership. >> reporter: it is a federal loan that requires homeowners to pay up to 31% of their income toward their mortgage. the government pays the rest for two years. since april they have helped 270 families and hope to help hundreds more before the program ends in september. to qualify, a homeowner's income must have declined by at least 15%, been delinquent on at least three home loan payments and must make no more than 20% above the area's median income. homeowners start paying back their loan after five years and if they have always paid their portion on time, their debt is completely forgiven. >> after suffering setbacks, steve says this program will help get him back on his feet. >
