ali rasmus is live with the flight cancellations. ali. >> reporter: john, all three new york area airports are shutting down operations at 9:00. we're talking about jfk, la guardia and newark new jersey airports some all bay area flights that were heading there have been cancelled. right now we're inside terminal 2 at sfo, behind me is the american airlines check in counter and we talked to people you see in the line. some of them have still been in line for the last hour, and many of them are trying to rebook their flights and trying to find an alternate way to get to their destination. along with cancellations to new york, there are other cancellations on other east coast airports. a number of flights from sfo to boston, washington, d.c., philadelphia, even chicago, to chicago, cancelled this morning. and the airport manager says that's because that plane he believes -- supposed to fly to chicago may be stuck on the east coast because of the storm. altogether more than 40 flights out of sfo were cancelled this morning. and a lot of

ali rasmus is live with why authorities fear the two-year- old may already be out of the country. ali. >> reporter: authorities say this man has local ties, so the bay area may be one of several places where he's headed. it's a sacramento fbi who yesterday issued this amber alert. they're concerned that 49-year- old man may be trying to take his two-year-old daughter out of the country. so police at sfo have been looking for this man. more than 600 agencies across the state of california. family members center not seen them for six days now. madeline's father was supposed to return the two-year-old to her mother last sunday. >> he wasn'ting using a cell phone or credit cards, and considering a child of two years of ailed we thought it was necessary to issue an endangered missing advisory. >> and this amber alert went up on highway signs across the bay area yesterday. they are still up this morning. here's the description of the vehicle authorities are looking for. he may be driving a 1998 green titanium 4runner with california plate. they also mentioned he is a u.s. citizen who was

ali rasmus is live in berkeley with more on the charges and any hope for appeal. ali. >> reporter: john, that news came from iranian state run tv. less than an hour ago they were each sentenced to five years for spying and three years for illegal entry so that's eight years for each of them. this is video of the two americans in a court hearing last month in iran. this is has been a two-year ordeal for them. they were detained by iranian authorities in july 2009. officials accused them of entering the country illegally and spying for the u.s. the hikers say they accidentally crossed the border when getting lost. iran released sarah shourd for medical reasons in september after a year in prison there. but fattal and bower still remain in an iranian prison. the u.s. state department and even u.n. leaders have asked iran to let the hikers go. but today they were sentenced to eight years each. people this morning are shocked and disappointed by that sentencing. >> it's just an unfortunate situation. it really was hoping they were going to be able to to be released. ma

ali rasmus joins us now at the back-to-school give away set to start this morning. i. >> reporter: we're at the salvation army warehouse in san francisco, and the organization has pre-registered about 650 families to take part in this school supply giveaway. so that's between 1300 to 1500 kids. they're going to be getting backpacks like this. some are pre-stuffed with all the typical school supplies, rulers, notebooks, some colored pencils. but we're also learned that some school districts here in san francisco are asking kids to come prepared with flash drives. so the organizers will be giving kids that as well. but before they get their school supplies, the point here organizers say is to make this a fun experience for kids. so they've got games and kind of a carnival-like atmosphere set up for them. they'll be doing bean bag games, go fish, golf, also a shelf in the other room with a bunch of books so kids can pick out books for themselves as well. organizers say this kind of event is essential as we head into the school year. we all know these are tough economic
