dr. sanjay gupta.amazing gabrielle giffords looked as good as she did but you could tell she wasn't using one of her arms, had trouble, you know, after a long wave, and so as you observed her, from these pictures, sanjay, how is she doing? >> well, it's exactly that. it's worth pointing out the beginning point of all this, january 8th, about three quarters of people who suffer gunshot wounds to the head like she had even survive. keep that in mind as you look at these images again. a little context. looks like she's acknowledging people, recognizing people, moving as you say just to the left side of her body. although her right leg is probably strong enough she's able to obviously maintain her weight, her right arm not moving at all. part of her rehab for some time. we've seen her go through that rehab, learning to right with her left hand instead of her right hand. these are things that take place there. she was saying thank you. it seemed like a lot. mouthing those words. i think as well as you point

dr. sanjay gupta, and what an extraordinary moment that was tear-jerking, wasn't it? >> well, from a medical perspective and neuro perspective, nearly 2/3 of the people who have this type of gunshot wounds to the head don't survive, and now nine months later not only alive, but able to cast a vote here on the floor. so it is remarkable in a medical and overall sense, piers. >> i mean, are you surprised that she was even able to do this and do you know what her current condition really is? can she converse with people, and have normal conversation? >> when you think of cognition overall, piers, it is two ways to divide it. first is comprehension and ability to understand things, and i can tell you that we did a whole investigation into this, and she was able to comprehend things almost always since the time of the injury, so that the comprehension has never been a factor, and more of her expression to your question, piers, that has been tough. she speaks in more of one or two-word sentences and difficulty expressing through the written word or gestures, but obviously s

dr. sanjay gupta is here to tell us what he noticed most when he saw the congresswoman. sanjay?> randi, as you look at that video, one thing to keep in mind from a medical standpoint is that three quarters of those who had the injury she had, don't survive. to see her walking on the floor puts that into a little bit more of a context. there are certain things i'm looking for specifically including fact that her right arm is not moving. if you look at what she's mouthing to people around her, it's short sentences, thank you, i love you. she obviously has very good attentiveness there. recognizes her name and acknowledges lots of people. it's quite remarkable and as the rehab doctors put it, she's in the top 1 percentile for people who recover after an injury like this. the rehab she was going through was pretty extensive in terms of trying to strengthen that right side of the body, in terms of trying to teach her to communication, to express not only through the spoken word but through the written word, the gestures. this is all part of speech. her come pre hegs has never been a

dr. sanjay gupta is joining us now from a refugee camp in kenya, not far away from somalia. ay, you have covered some horrendous stories for us. but we have literally tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of starving people. so many children who are starving. what have you seen there? >> reporter: well, this is the largest refugee camp in the world, wolf. and that should tell you a lot right there. one of the things that struck me right away is that -- just how much a chronic problem what we're describing has been for some time out here. this particular refugee camp had about 300,000 people in it a year ago. and over the last year, they have added another 100,000. about 400,000 people here now. it's only designed to hold about 90,000 people, wolf. so you can just get an idea of just how overcrowded the conditions are, how tough the conditions are. what happens, wolf, as you've heard now, is that because of the drought, the worst that it's been seen in the last 60 years, crops died. livestock that were dependent on the crops died. and people dependent on the livestock

dr. sanjay gupta noticed she wasn't moving her right arm much. >> this is what's sort of expected if youve a head injury like this, a left sided brain injury controls the right side of the body. that's why the right arm is weak, the right leg likely weak. it also in part is responsible for speech. speech more specifically the ability to express yourself, to say words, to write words, to make gestures that are meaningful. so that is still part of her rehab process. >> meanwhile tropical storm emily expected to reach haiti by tonight or early tomorrow. it could cause flash floods and mudslides pap tropical storm watch is in effect for the much the eastern caribbean. florida, georgia and the carolinas could be in the storm's path by the weekend. >>> death toll rises in syria. a human rights group says at least two dozen were killed by security forces, many more injured. the international community is intensifying its pressure on syria's government to stop its brutal crackdown. >>> rang lawmakers are deciding whether to ask u.s. troops to stay beyond the year end deadline. a decision could c

dr. sanjay gupta joined me last hour and talked about gifford's appearance, as well.e's what he had to say about her recovery. >> just take it from a pure medical sense, about 75% of people who have this type of injury don't survive at all. so the fact -- that was january #th. seven months later, she's standing there, she's obviously conversing, interacting, recognizing her colleagues. saying short sentences. i also notice from a medical standpoint, she's not moving her right arm really at all. it's all left sided waving to everyone. she got some assistance, someone helping her help her down the aisle. that's not unexpected, as well. this is a left sided brain injury, as you remember. it affects not only your speech, your ability to express yourself, but also the strength on the right side of the body. so it all makes sense, but, again, seven months almost later, this is pretty remarkable recovery. one of her rehab doctors said she's in the top 1% of people who recover from this. >> and we're being told 12:15 eastern time, the president expected to step out into the r
