i am dylan ratigan. president obama sirened the debt deal into law immediately authorizing our ability to action widely available financing to the u.s. government from the banking system with an additional $400 billion in treasury borrowing to pay our bills over the next few months. that, of course, just hours before the oh, so dramatic default deadline that was such a political event. this may stave off a credit default. and we certainly have available financing. but haven't we already defaulted when it comes to jobs and the promise of american prosperity and working together towards shared values, toward a common goal with integrity and respect? our friend senator tom coburn put it best this morning. >> i think the politicians won and america lost, is what i think. it was great theater. in the long run, the country lost. >> i couldn't agree with the man more and we've been talking about the debt ceiling, of course, since april. on this show and pretty much every other show in the media. in fact, in man

i am dylan ratigan. let's get after it. stocks drops 4% on the day, concluding their worst decline in two years' time. think about the past two week. this is less about a reaction to a specific bad economic report or debt fight, although we have plenty of them. this massive sell-off is much a result of the global perception america has tremendous challenges with employment, with prosperity. by the way, we also have tremendous resources to solve them, but they are political structure at this point, it's so lacking in integrity and shared purpose that it is too weak to actually address the problems. to our benefit in america, the same indictment of character and process applies across western europe. in fact, they may be worse than us, which might be our best hope for the short term. the reaction has been in the making for two weeks. the dow down nine of the past ten days as they have observed the carnival of american additionmaking s&p down eight of the past nine. the markets in effect shedding risk saying i don't know that

for reaction we bring in dylan ratigan host of "the dylan ratigan show."atching the boards all day. what's your reaction? >> well, i late to say it, but i watch all of this with a little ironic amusement, thomas. not because of -- any particular pleasure in watching the economies deteriorate or the markets fall, but watching everybody blame the ratings agencies or blame the government when our own government made an explicit decision three years ago in a financial crisis to take all of these problems from the banks and put them in the government, and now three years later it's like, hey, you mean that decision that we made in the fall of 2008 whaig was gettg liquidated becausen accounting fraud and we bailed them out and put it into the government? oh, you mean doing that after the morphine of money printing wears out means the problem is still there? well, guess what? the problem is still there. and until we actually, thomas, deal with the root problem, which is we created a pile of debt that the banks didn't have to lend, that the consumers couldn't pay,

i am dylan ratigan. a lovely monday afternoon here in new york city. 4:00 p.m. on the east coast. the closing bell and s&p 500, shellacked, people. 6% in one day. 10% over three days. its biggest three-day drop since november, 2008. ah, the drugs of this is wearing out. rearing its ugly head once again. the rout wiping out $2 trillion in value from every public economy in america. bear in mind, reinflated with funny money from the fed. easy come, easy go. the biggest and one that matters the failure to produce in our economy, as result, evidence slowing combined with politic n politicians' inability and a sell-off driven not only by the s&p decision by other variables only making matters worse and speaking of ghosts of christmas past, we also watched our own credit rating move from aaa tore aa, but also we watched today's downgrade of the government-funded housing finance companies. you've heard of them. freddie mac and fannie mae. we basically create lending vehicles to help subsidize housing. relieved of their toxic debt in 2008 -- by the government. that was the bailout, people

i'm matt miller in for dylan ratigan. when you think of hurricane devastation, vermont's not the first state to come to mind. but showing how baldly that state got hit. national guard troops airlifting food and water to towns cut off by floodwaters. the state dealing with the worst flooding its seen in nearly a century. after the storm itself, new flood evacuations in jersey, where swollen river continue to rise. clearing basements and clearing downed trees an branches. 39 deaths in 12 states now blame and irene. 2.5 million remine without power and service along one of amtrak's busiest corridors is still out. all a reminder of the unpredictability of these storm systems. as we look ahead, how can the science be improved? joining us now with answers a brian, chair of a plied marine physics at the school of atmospheric science at the university of miami, and jeff masters, co-founder of weather underground as well as a former hurricane hunter himself. here's jeff in action just a few years ago. take a look. >> right in the

i am dylan ratigan, and by now you've probably seen the number. 9.1% for the most recent month, overall unemployment rate, down a tick from last month because the number of people considered to be in the work force continues to shrink, all of those american whose have simply quick looking for work are no longer counted. which means real unemployment is exactly double that number. 18.2%, or 1 in 5 is either looking for work and can't find it or stopped looking for work. the other number i'd like you to focus on today. 117,000. that's the number of jobs we created in the economic engine of our country last month. less than one tlerd of what we would need to be creating on a monthly basis to even address this crisis. remember, we need 360,000 job as month to get anywhere close to that 6% unemployment number we enjoyed a few years ago. and that, of course, the barrier to all this, the political leaders who fail to address its underlying causes despite the rhetoric that offer us. >> what i want the american people and our partners around the world to know is this -- we are going to get throu

dylan ratigan, bring him in now. this doesn't who great.is is not a bounceback. >> the interesting thing, you know this better than mosts ezra, in the short term the stock market is a voting machine. gives you a sense of sentiment, a point of view, people feel optimistic do they feel scared, hopeful? over the longer term the market is a scale. it actually weighs the embedded value of production through a financial measurement over a period of time. and at a moment where we're watching three years of monetary policy, of creating money effectively, trying to loosen the available capital in the hopes that doing that in some way would magically spark investment and job creation. the market is now realized after three years of this stimulation that it's not working. i would argue that until you deal with things like the tax policy, trade policy, banking policy that are the extractionary factors in this country, you won't even have that happen, but that's for another day. but with the market is realizing, whatever this central bank is doing, what

i'm dylan ratigan, and "hardball with chris matthews" is up right now. >>> drop in stock. let's play "hardball." >>> good evening. i'm chris matthews in washington. leading off tonight -- fear. the stock market was having a tough time the last couple of week. today we saw bad time. the dow dropped 513 points today shaving off more than 4% of its value. the dow had its lowest close in 8 months. what happened today is bad for the economy, bad, of course, for president obama. the fact that the market itself was largely about europe's debt crisis is going to be of little solace to the people running mr. obama's re-election campaign. if they're hoping the president's political skills bus a loser republican opponent will get him through next november, don't count on it. i worked for president carter against reagan and vote letters not accept the argument had you no choice but to stick with the incumbent. it's a losing strategy. plus, how exactly did the tea party, a minority in one-half of one-third of the government, the house of representative, manage to shape the direction of
