so is joplin ready? joplin school superintendent c.j. huff joins me right now. good to see you. >> thank you for having me. >> let's begin with where students will be attending class. i understand some will be in an industrial park. others will have classes actually at a shopping mall. describe for me what first day of school is going to be like for a lot of these kids. >> sure. we had 54% of our students after the tornado that didn't have a place to go to school. so we had to build out about half of our district in finding locations, it was definitely a challenge. we did find about 95,000 square feet of space at the local mall. and we built that out. we built out some warehouse spaces at two other locations. obviously we brought some modular units in as well as combining some of our schools to make room for other schools. we've been successful in finding all of our space for our students to start school on august 17th. >> how are the students doing? are most feeling like they are ready to get back in school? so many lost their homes and feel a little detached i

we've sent our cameras back to joplin, missouri.w night we'll have a special report on their progress. >>> well, it was intended to be our feel-good story this week but it didn't quite turn out that way. veteran long distance swimmer diana niad was trying to complete a 103-mile swim from cuba to the florida keys at the age of 61 but she had to give up this morning when her galan effort failed because of large ocean swells, a shoulder injury and asthma got her about halfway through the journey. >>> have you ever been to geddysburg? you've heard them say, once in a while they find bullets and artifacts from the civil war to this day. well, it's happened again. back on august 4th, an oak tree fell on culp hill which saw some intense fighting in 1863 when they went to cut a fresh stump they discovered the tree was full of bullets. trees like this are called "witness trees" because still some of them witness the fighting. all being preserved in the nearby museum like all gettysburg battlefield artifacts. >> up next, we'll meet rosy and w

shannon travis reports from joplin. >> every time i drive by it's really sad. and the friends that i made in the hallways. >> it's sad knowing you will not be able to graduate from here. >> reporter: school buildings were damaged or destroyed, including joplin's only high school. >> we came to the realization that we had 54% of the kids that had no place to go. >> reporter: this new school year, high school students will split up and ninth and tenth graders will go to the existing middle school, and the upper classmen will attend school at this mall. officials say it was the only place big enough. rising seniors accompanied me to their new 21st century school. it has open spaces, and walls that move, and a fitness center and coffee shop run by the students. every one of these kids will get laptops. but how will students focus on learning? the professor at the university of missouri, a child psychologist, he has been to over 80 disaster zones. he helps children learn even when death and disaster surround them. >> when that kid or person is saying i don't want to

now, that's how parts of joplin looked after the tornado swept through.nd you know, when you think about it, again, there's sort of the after-video, which is amazing, how the power of these tornadoes -- do these tornadoes, do they sort of set up the weather that we're seeing now in term of hurricane and heat, or are they separate? are they seasonal more than anything? >> well, in this case, it was really kind of a seasonal event. i mean, tornados can occur any place on the planet, they can occur any time of the year, but there are times when they are more prevalent. in north america, they're usually more prevalent late spring and going from the transition from winter into spring. that's the sweet spot. these winds, associated with this one in joplin, an ef-5, about 300 miles per hour. and thank heavens, we said this earlier this morning, thank heavens this happened on a sunday, did not happen while the school was filled with kids. >> and very quickly, would they even have gotten a warning, yes or no? >> i believe they would have. >> that's good news. reyn

this is a big question with joplin and the tornadoes. we often times spend so much time on the science, we forget about the people. this is probably for me the societal aspects of how population react saying how do you change behavior over the short term and long term. how do you take things that are not the norm. i'll give you some examples. there are two successful chain -- successful campaign. when i was growing up not wearing your seat belt and smokes was the norm. today it's the other way around. when we talk about preparedness, most people if they have flashlight and basic steps is about as good as it gets. but you are pretty much an out lier if you really got ready. how do you change that? what we find, if you try to do in a lot of turns there are impact. bad things happen. it was measurable, demonstrated, and had consequence. since disasters are such a low frequency event, fortunately, it doesn't fall in that. we need more social sciences and fund social science research which is not hard engineering, hard science, isn't as glamo
