the two men were arrested in july 200 along with sarah shourd who was released last year on humanitarian grounds because of her health. the three say they were hiking in northern iraq and never intentionally cross the border into iran. one of the questions now is whether the two could be pardoned at the end of the month, which marks the end of ramadan. monty francis is in san francisco with that part of the story for us. monty? >> reporter: we talked to a professor of international relations at san francisco state who said that these eight year sentences should not be viewed as the final word in this case. political experts say that it's possible shane bauer and josh fattal could be pardoned in the next ten days during the holy month of ramadan because that is sometimes done as a humanitarian gesture. eight years seems to be a relatively light sentence for trespassing and espionage giving past knowledge of cases in the iranian court system. these sentences could stand or there could be an appeal in the next 20 years. >> there's a humanitarian option that only the supreme leader of iran c
