allen had to surrender. that begins one of the most important things that most vermonters and americans don't know about the saga of prison of ethan allen. he was captured and told he would be sent to england and tried for treason, hangs, drawn, and quartered. a gory sentence of death. he and others were put in chains in the hold of a ship in the st. lawrence, and they could hear the guns of the americans getting closer and closer, arriving just a little too late to hit montreal as the ship sailed towards england. you have 34 men in a cage in vile conditions crossing the atlantic in chapes in the winter time, and none of them died. these were tough people. allen basically got to enraged at the treatment at one point, he took his man any kls and pit through the chain of soft iron. he had a gap in his smile then, and he was very proud to show it off. reaching england, to his amazement, there was a very enthusiastic crowd because his fame of taking the king's fort, which the british could not take, had gone ahe

oh, ethan allen, oh, ethan allen. and seems to be the part vermonters are most proud of. [laughter] >> but they know little beyond that, even beyond the schools. ethan allen, among other things, i found, just to start out with a little summary -- in addition to taking the most formidable fort with 89 men and not fire a shot, he was the first published diased philosopher. he organized 29 communities to defend the new hampshire grants as it was known. there still wasn't a new hampshire. preserving the homesteads until the revolution came along, for 40 years. he was a prolific author. i was surprised at how much he wrote. but he was better known as the land speculator and the two things connected between ethan allen bought and sold land, bought it as cheaply as he could and sold it in small parcels to hundreds and hundreds of frontier families but if you didn't have any money on hand to buy a piece of land when he came you through his clearing he sold you a pamphlets or he got a few acres or parted with a schilling. he really is the founding father of vermont because without

so, that's the story of ethan allen. why don't we know more about it? because they took on the puritan clergy and they lived after she died when missionary from new haven came up and literally stumbled even alan's great. they said on february 12th, ethan allen, the general from vermont and he died in presides in hell where he looks up forever toward heaven from the flames. you get the idea and that went from pulpit to pulpit until his memory went along with it. was revived in the civil war when the green mountain boys swarmed into the uniform at the site of gettysburg and the cold harbor etc. more per-capita fought and died on the union side than any other state and that's also the legacy of ethan allen and the planes that fly to patrol for new york city since 9/11 are the green mountain boys of vermont. his legacy was a state with dissent, never really agreeing even among its congressional delegation from the west side of the mountains to the east side of the mountains but it has a strong reputation for diversity and most of all the legacy of ethan all

our report tonight from nbc's ron allen. >> reporter: the six students left court in shame. 19-year-old sam eshaghoff allegedly took the s.a.t.s for them. a graduate of the same high school, now a college sophomore. the exam's top score is 2400. >> scores for 2220, 2210, 2140, 2180. what these six kids did was they took an opportunity away from every other child. >> reporter: four already are in college. two still enrolled at great neck north high school. one of the country's top 100 in recent years where students say the pressure to get into college is intense. >> if they had the money on hand and they can, they had the opportunity it's not that surprising. >> reporter: prosecutors say eshaghoff charged up to $2,500, used fake i.d.s to impersonate the students, including one female, at a testing center where they would not be known. he pleaded not guilty. his lawyer said this is not a matter for the courts. >> the issue should be handled administratively within the school. >> reporter: authorities say rumors of cheating within the school led to an investigation. it found some students
