spoke for in city hall. nonetheless, the two men didn't see eye-to-eye idea logically. they often voted against each other's most important pieces of legislation. dan white found himself being defeated again and again and again. he was very ineffective supervisor. at the same time he lost his job as a fireman because the city attorney ruled he couldn't hold that job and be a supervisor so his salary had fallen to $9,600 a year, which is what supervisors were paid. he had a sweetheart lease because he was politician, at pier 39. he started a hot potato stand, but his wife was down there working, their little son charlie was often being carted down to the potato stand. dan felt very, very, very pressured by all of this. and then in the face of all that pressure, he resigned, abruptly, and without having spoken to many people about his plans on november 10th. he simply tendered his resignation. he thought he was under pressure before. now he really came under pressure. all the people who relied on him in city h

marijuana is about to be out on the plaza in front of oakland city hall. the international cannabis expo of 2011 promises to break new ground. >> it will be the first outdoor cannabis event that we know of that where we are closing down city streets to host a cannabis expo in a major city. >> last year and the year before, the cannabis expo was held. but oakland stepped up. advocates say promoting marijuana with a street fair is good for the city. >> we are bringing in 10 to 20,000 visitors who will spend money and lots of people being employed to put this on. >> oakland has three medical marijuana facilities, pot possession the lowest police priority and a city tax on marijuana. >> i think it is a sign of how far we have come politically that we can have a smoking area right here in the plaza in front of oakland city hall. >> but is oaklanded ready for that? it's been advertised that medical marijuana patients would have a place right here in front of city hall where they could smoke. the mayor has a different view on that. >> this is not a smoke in. this

they had an exhibition at city hall. ty officials heard about her efforts and they invited her to this facility. we thought it would coincide with our efforts to get folks to recycle, it is a great educational tool. since then, we have had 95 professional artists come through. >> how has the program changed over the years? how has the program -- what can the public has an artist engage with? >> for the most part, we worked with metal and wood, what you would expect from a program like ours. over the years, we tried to include artists and all types of mediums. conceptual artists, at installation, photographers, videographers. >> that has really expanded the program out. it is becoming so dynamic right now with your vision of interesting artists in gauging here. why would an artist when to come here? >> mainly, access to the materials. we also give them a lot of support. when they start, it is an empty studio. they go out to the public area and -- we call it the big store. they go out shopping, take the materials that, and

and work here in city hall for a few years.hen lightning struck and i was appointed as a member of the board of supervisors in august of 2004 and have been here ever since. most people would call me a moderate. i have a knack and a love for the law. i saw a way to combine that love with service to the political process. i think having watched campaigns not as a candidate, i do not appreciate the kind of thick skin you need is a candidate. being a candidate, it is not the easiest thing in the world. i have come since then to really appreciate my opponent, in the sense that while i may disagree with them, we have policy disagreements, they are putting their foot on the line. they're stepping into the arena. this is a lot about them. being a candidate is not an easy endeavor, and you have to respect anybody who does that. >> you are all about to get an introduction to the fairly daunting numbers that the city is about to face. that the city is facing right now. the mayor, the way the process works, the mayor introduces his budget,
