it deserves collective attention in making sure haight ashbury is not compromised but also an area we want to make sure is accessible for all. cole valley neighborhood, you know, to haight, is a bit of a hamlet, an enclave near the haight, in between there and ucsf and inner sunset. inner sunset, it's just a great swing area. what i mean by that is you just have such a great combination between merchants and residents, mass transit hub, a lower pac heights, certainly wants to enjoy the prosperity of pac heights but not want to lose its diversity that spills over from the fillmore western addition area. north of pan handle is a composite of everything i have just said. those are the aspects of the district, neighborhood by neighborhood, that makes it a challenging and needy district, but one i love and am responding to. >> ♪ >> welcome to another addition of district sf, sftv's profile of san francisco neighborhoods an their issues. i'm jennifer lowe. today we will focus on district five. let's get started by looking at the problems the residents are facing. >> any of the problems we s

the haight-ashbury line. what is going to happen is, if you reroute that line and it was proposed it goes straight through haight street, and not go up masonic avenue, what will happen is, you are going to have people who are elderly and frail. how do you expect them to get to their homes? are they going to have to crawl? right now, people are inconvenienced with the 2 clement line. you have to walk to california street and that is a long block. why do you on the board tried to walk that walk on a walker? suppose you are on oxygen. suppose you have hiv. it is a gross injustice to do this and i have brought this to the attention of people. they simply ran this thing through. this has been an ill-fated idea to begin with. you need more buses and need more drivers. $2 million for contractor, you can have it for the buses. if you can get those lines downtown, you can get them through the clement. you have six digit salaries. this is a disgrace and it is cruel to the most probable in san francisco. this has to stop

the cole street clinic is a youth clinic in the heart of the haight ashbury and they target youth. tom woodell takes care of many of the central city residents and they have great expertise in providing services for many of the homeless. potrero hill and southeast health centers are health centers in those particular communities that are family health centers, so they provide health care to patients across the age span. . >> many of our clients are working poor. they pay their taxes. they may run into a rough patch now and then and what we're able to provide is a bridge towards getting them back on their feet. the center averages about 14,000 visits a year in the health clinic alone. one of the areas that we specialize in is family medicine, but the additional focus of that is is to provide care to women and children. women find out they're pregnant, we talk to them about the importance of getting good prenatal care which takes many visits. we initially will see them for their full physical to determine their base line health, and then enroll them in prenatal care which occurs over

by his brother, joe evans of michigan, his best friend, and those of us devoted to him in the haight ashbury area, who appreciated his steadfast activism and ability to really push buttons. i am sure that arthur will be missed. the next in memoriam is one i gave attention to a couple of days after it happened. the family is not getting the attention necessary. on july 17, a 20-year-old was shot to death outside his hayes valley home. this might have been one of the stories people scanned by in the newspaper if it was not for his family and friends. the seven tepees family organization deals with young offenders. they are stepping forward to make sure he is not forgotten and does not become another statistic on the homicide list. going june 16, 1991, he was one of the seven tepees success stories. he graduated from high school and was preparing to move to college in los angeles this month. he worked at abercrombie and fish as manager -- and fitch as manager. nothing got to him. employees remember him as a happy guy. he leaves behind his young son, three younger siblings, and his loving mother
