a culture i realize that was a lot japanese. even though i hadn't grownup in it and i was as american as apple pie in so many ways that i started to learn more about the culture and i thought, i'm more japanese than chinese in many ways. this book gave that to me. that was the greatest gift of the samurai's garden. that and the fact that somehow people kept reading it. it was the book i was worried about and i had sent it to my editor and she called. i'm telling you the gossip stuff now. i think in a way that's more interesting. i was very nervous because i didn't know how she would receive this book. she called and said to me, well, it's very different. that's what i began with. it was the first time i said, this character not necessarily has to be asian. none of these characters necessarily have to be asian. i was of mind opposite of what you are saying happened through the book. what happened was the more i started to research when i discovered warner's, ime wantedo write. i was feeling older as a person and wanted to translate that into a book. when i thought i would write about the care taking situation and wanted to write about a mother and daughter and i thought was there an aging disease? where children grow old quickly. by the time they are 7 or 8 they look like little old people because they age so quickly. the first thing i asked myself is there a version of this disease for older people. does it start later in a person's life? as i'm researching i discover warner's syndrome and that's how it came to be that particular disease in the book. i thought this works because she would have a life before the disease started to age her in the 20's as opposed to bei

i will tell you up front it was a book i thought that may be they wouldn't publish. my very first book was women of the silk. i knew that i was writing about something that was a little bit different because i didn't know about the women of the silk until i wanted to write something telling their story much the second book is the test book for us writers you hear that a lot where the publishers are wondering if the author has a second book. everybody here i feel sitting here all of you have one book in you. whether it's a family story or your story whether it's ancestors whether it's your history you want to write about. but it's the second one that's hard. i felt that when i turnod the computer and thought, now i have to write book number 2. i had in mind that i wanted to write something very different from women of the silk that was strictly about the feminist chinese women during the turn of the century and i wanted to write about my japanese culter. i didn't have the story or the culture unfortunately because i was born in san francisco, half chinese and half japa

but anyway, i was quite amazed when i went to see a rough cut of the movie that it was what i wrote, very much what i wrote, except those two dumb sentences: "hey, let's go to the roadhouse" and "hey, let's come back from the roadhouse..." [laughter] which destroyed the claustrophobia that was very important to me in the film. so i saw this rough cut of a very, very good, tough movie. it puzzled me a little bit when i saw it as to why it was being shot in black and white, since when i wrote the play, i wrote it in color, you know. but i realized that even back then, a serious movie had to be in black and white, that if a serious movie was in color, it wouldn't be taken seriously. very, very interesting. so i saw the rough cut without the music, and it was a good, fair, honest, tough representation of my play. then i saw it a second time, when they added the movie music, and the whole thing changed. all of its ambiguities and all of its toughness were softened by the movie score-- you know, the score that tells you when you go to a movie how you're going to-- supposed to react and wha
